328JET For USExpress?

Sun May 07, 2000 6:23 am

The USAirways pilots union (ALPA) have agreed that the airline can negotiate for future regional jet deliveries above and beyond the previously agreed upon 35 to as many as 70.

Mesa Airlines just received its first ERJ-145 in USX colors, the first of a 100 ERJ order in addition to the 32 ERJ's it already operates for USX. Mesa is also the parent company of Air Midwest which operates as USX with Mesa's old B-1900D's out of MCI/ICT.

Chautauqua is operating the Saab 340 and ERJ for USX, but in much smaller numbers. Chautuqua operates a mini-hub at LGA for USX with RJ's (maximum 10 RJ's by 12/2000) and two hubs (IND and PIT) for Saab 340/J31 services. Chautauqua will also begin services from STL as TWExpress with Saab 340 aircraft.

Allegheny and PSA are the two wholly-owned carriers of USExpress. Allegheny operates many Dash-8 aircraft out of a number of airports, and the same is true of PSA with the Do-328. Allegheny operate primarily in the intra-NE market; PSA in the NE to SE market.

It seems that all of the 35 new RJ's are going to come from Mesa airlines operated in USX colors. I thought PSA and Allegheny were on target to order the 328JET and possibly the 428JET, because of huge backlogs on both the ERJ and CRJ production lines and good commonality with existing Do-328 prop aircraft. It now seems that neither PSA or Allegeny will be getting any new RJ's.

Does anyone have any information on whether the above is correct or not?
the 328 JET should have been ordered by now....

RE: 328JET For USExpress?

I´ve no current information about the US Express order but as far as I see there are 4 carriers which operate feeder services for US:
1. Chautauqua Airlines with a ERJ-145 fleet
2. Mesa Airlines with ERJ-145
3. PSA with Dornier Do328 Turboprops
4. Allenghy with Dash 8

Chautauqua and Mesa will stay with the ERJ-145, this part of the feeder fleet is clear. If they order more jets it will be the ERJ-135, -140 and -145. PSA is from my point of view likely to go for the 328JET due to the big commonality with the 328 TP. But don´t forget that these turboprops are ALL quite young, the oldest one should have reached the age of 5 or 6 years, too early for a replacement. The same with the Dash 8 fleet. Wy replace new planes when there is no urgent need?
