KL To SFO With 763ER In Nov!

Wed Aug 31, 2005 7:35 pm

Starting from november it appears that KLM will operate flights to SFO
with the 763ER! (not all flights offcourse).
Two questions
1. Is it the first time that KL deploys such small equipment to SFO.
2. It's an 11hrs plus flight, is that within the 763ER's range??

I thought that the AMS-IAH flight was very close to the range limit but this
leg is even longer.

I flew CDG-SFO on an AF 767 back in 96, and it was a 12 hour flight I think. Can anybody tell me what model of the 767 I most likely was on?

KLM uses the 763's to YVR, so to SFO shouldn't be that much further.
And if they schedule an aircraft for a certain route, one might assume they will have figured out whether that aircraft can fly the route  cheeky

United flies SFO-CDG with the 763ER, no reason KLM shouldn't be able to fly to AMS with one.

There is no range issue. Aeroflop flew SFO-SVO which has to be another 1 1/2 longer. The 763 does has some legs on it!

Looks like winter schedule is
MD11- except Mo/We
763 - on Mo/We

Nice spotting!

Is SVO really longer from SFO? Seems that on the polar route it is closer. I'll have to pull out my trusty globe/atlas to check it out.  Smile

Range should not be a major problem. AZ operated MXP-SFO with 763ERs until they discontinued that route.

Is there a special reason for the deployment of this aircraft type on the AMS-SFO route? LH's, AF's and BA's flights go out full every day so I guess that this move is not related to the load factors or am I wrong here?

I am guessing the -300. I don't think the -200 has that much range.

I flew the same route in 1993, it was with an AF 763ER

Actually, the -200ER's range is about 6600nm vs about 5500 nm for the 300ER. AF had at one time 2 200ER's and 7 300ER's. So probably it was a 300ER. But I don't know what routes they used the 200ER's for. I myself flew a 300ER CDG-Cayenne-CDG in 1999.

AF operated a fleet of B767-200ER and B767-300ER inherited from UTA/Aéromaritime.

The two -200ER, F-GHGD/F-GHGE were very briefly operated (less than a year) and sold to Balkan Bulgarian airlines in 1992 (now both of them are with El AL).

1 -300ER, F-GFGK, was sold in 1996 to Sobelair. Air France kept on operating a fleet of 5 B767-300ER until 2003 (F-GFGF/G/H/I/J). The last aircraft, retired in July 2003 was used on the CDG-PHL route.

Indeed, the B767-300ER was used on the CDG-SFO-CDG route until the mid-90s during the winter programs. The route was then taken over by an A340-300.

Indeed, KLM is downgrading its daily AMS-SFO-AMS roundtrip from the 777 to a conbination of 763ER (Monday, Wednesday) and MD-11 (K, T, F, S and Sunday)
Is the route doing bad since they have to dowgrade the service?

Not doing bad, more than likely just a seasonal adjustment

Well not only did Aeroflot fly the 763 to SVO... but it was also from LAX. the SFO route was a 777 via SEA. LAX-SVO is 6078 miles, SFO-AMS is 5473 miles...

Does this have anything to do with the recent reduction of 763ER service to IAH in favor of PrivatAir BBJ service?

If that's the case, I for sure will choose to fly NW to AMS via DTW. 2 inch more pitch on the A330, a chance of an upgrade to First class is a lot better than being cramped into a seat with 31 inch for 11 hours without the great IFE of the B777 that's currently flying the route.

I'm sorry, but that is a dumb question: if the AMS-SFO was not within the range of the 763, why on earth would KL people - who probably know far more than any of us - deploy it on the route? Jesus. Think, people.
