Spirit To Fly To DFW

Fri Sep 02, 2005 12:20 am

From their website:

"Spirit Airlines announces new service from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport starting January 10, 2006 to its hub in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with convenient connections to the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Latin America.

To celebrate this new service, Spirit is having an introductory fare sale. Take advantage of these incredibly low fares from only $99* each way while you can. You must hurry - fares must booked on spiritair.com by September 30, 2005"

Another once-daily flight to connect with their FLL hub operation. I wonder if choosing cities that have service to most of the Caribbean destinations (like ATL) already is a good way to use their resources.

What is Spirit trying to do, offer a single daily flight to each of the Legacy's prime hub at the hopes of trying to attract pax for their Caribbean flights out of MIA? Okay, DFW doesn't have as many Caribbean destinations as ATL does, but Spirit is in for another fight.

Never count out an airline that makes a living on an average fare of $84 between LGA and FLL. Spirit has always been an enigma to me.

ok...the thinking I believe is:
The more planes from FLL to the Caribbean, the more planes at FLL...the more planes at FLL the more they have to RON at FLL...there is no room to RON at FLL...so they have to fly it elsewhere. Why not pick a couple of bucks up in the process!

That is good thinking Flairport. With the flight leaving DFW so early in the morning, that would eliminate the need to RON the aircraft in FLL. AirTran is talking of reinstating their DFWFLL flight so there must be demand for the route.

As FLAIRPORT said, and as I've said many times before, Spirit has no place to put planes overnight, so why not send them somewhere else? This is why they are starting FLL-DFW/ATL/MCO/TPA. All four markets have a healthy amount of traffic to the Caribbean, and Spirit is aiming at tapping into that by offering them cheap Caribbean service. The money on these flights is going to be coming from those connecting passengers, while they can dump cheap seats for local traffic to fill up the rest of the plane. They have very little to lose, and Delta/American are best left leaving them alone. With only one daily flight each to Atlanta and Dallas, it is quite clear they aren't trying to "mess with the big boys" in stealing local traffic.

Not just PLS. Spirit will also be flying to GDT (Grand Turk), the only non-stop service between the United States and GDT, and the first since Bahamasair ended MIA-GDT a few years ago. FLL-PLS-FLL 5x a week and FLL-GDT-PLS-FLL 2x a week.

And Grand Cayman should be announced soon, with Mexico City coming in June 2006. Also, *rumours* (and nothing more, so take it for what it's worth) are that they will be heading to Freeport, Cozumel, Port of Spain, San Jose (Cosa Rica), and Pittsburgh in 2006. And look for Tampa-Nassau soon.

I just wonder how much more attention the FLL airport can handle before it turns into LGA South?

I do believe that FLL is already the most delayed airport in the nation per the DOT.

Right now, I believe we have 10 in H terminal, although they are common use with int'l flights on AC, etc. We have already outgrown the terminal, so I don't know if a move to another terminal will be forthcoming, but I hope so

I'm gonna start calling Spirit the "One Flight Wonder". They're starting service to mega-hubs (ATL and DFW) with single, daily flights. Foolish, I think, as the competition will squash them with frequency/capacity and match their fares.

I really question the wisdom of these two announcements...

Again, for the nth time, the flight is not desgined to cater to local traffic. Spirit is starting these flights for Caribbean traffic. More than one daily flight is not needed to cater to DFW-MBJ or ATL-PLS demand!

I am truely excited that Spirit is coming to St. Thomas. It's been great seeing the airlines start service to the island. The more the merrier! Welcome Spirit! I'd love to see JetBlue come in and compete with AA on the JFK route.

Although I understand that FLL may have facility constraints as far as NK is concerned, I doubt the reason they are flying half way across the country is because they couldn't find a piece of concrete at FLL to park a freakin' 319 overnight...

Spirit is adding service to connect with their Caribbean flights, and yes, they are hoping to pick up some local traffic as well. Maybe they're testing the waters for eventual additional flights, but I'm still a little baffled as to why they're adding service to ATL and DFW specifically...

It is one of the main reasons. Why have the plane sit in FLL and do nothing, when it can make money flying to DFW in the evening, and flying back in the morning?

Both are large cities of over 4M residents with good Caribbean demand and, in the case of DFW, limited Caribbean service.

Wow Spirit is REALLY expanding. First ATL, then DFW, STT, PLS, also then GDT, MEX, Freeport, P.O.S, San Jose (CR), and PIT.

That is 10 cities all being announced over next couple months. Wow Way to go NK.

Also having more FLL flights may hurt FLL with traffic (too many, way too many) having the planes flying to many more places will ease congestion down at Concourse H.

Once the last of the announced routes start, NK will need 10 gates in FLL to pull off the "bank" they have created. 10 flights arrive between 9:45am-10:15am from mainland stations (PVD, LGA, ACY, DCA, ATL, TPA, MCO, DTW, ORD, DFW) and then turn out the carribbean flights (NAS, PLS, STT, SJU, SDQ, KIN, MBJ, CUN). The other 2 aircraft turn back from FLL to DTW and ACY...

In the article that was linked on yahoo news, they kept saying Spirit was the "Wright" way to FLL. Is this just a dig at WN or are they trying to imply something else?

Good for Freeport, they need jet service to FLL since Laker Bahamas ceased 727 operations.

It's both! They're saying "yes we can offer the Metroplex low fares at DFW" and they're going about it the "Wright and legal way", no need to change the law.

Very quickly after it launched; did better than TPA-DFW, though. IIRC, that route never launched.

The DFW-FLL flight was a through flight from LAS. It was seasonal.

IIRC, FL's DFW-FLL flight has now gone from "seasonal" to "never." FL discontinued the route after only a few months of operation, as MAH said.

Keep in mind Spirit has a MX facility in Fort Worth at Meacham Field, so MD-80's are rotating in and out of here quite often.

OK...so I am a JetBlue boy at heart...here is what I have to say about FLL...the increase of flight activity from multiple carriers at FLL will encourage local bureaucrats to follow FAA recommendations to expand the runway capabilities at the airfield and allow FLL to grow to the potential that it has currently and the potential it can carrier in t he years to come...thanks!

that is true... I wonder if they will move that to DFW.

Anyway, if you read the article on the DFW homepage, you will see that we are also getting $250,000 to start up operations from the airport authority. I don't think that is a bad deal for just 1 flight a day.

Nahh, that wouldn't be a good idea because when al their MD-80's are gone within the next 2/3 years then in the end it is just a waste of money. If they could move it to DFW for not much money at all then maybe it might be good idea with all this fuel problems today.

I read something very interesting in DFW airport's "DFW people" newspaper dated September 8, 2005.

As an incentive to begin service at DFW, the airport gave Spirit a $250,000 airport improvement package to help them establish attractive areas - ticket and gate counters - in terminal E.

This seems like a lot of money to fix up a common use gate area for 1 flight a day.

This has irked several carriers at DFW.
