XM Deactivated On AirTran?

Fri Sep 02, 2005 4:31 am

Last night on my AirTran ATL-PHF flight the FA made the following announcement:

"Although XM Satellite Radio is installed on this aircraft, we are currently overhauling our XM equipment across the entire fleet. Therefore XM Satellite Radio is not operational on any of our aircraft at this time."

What happened?

How much does it cost AirTran to have XM on its planes?
The next generation of aircraft is just around the corner!

Many of the aircraft are receiving an upgrade to the XM software. The plane you were on last night is one of those planes. The upgrade will be finished soon. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I was told there was a problem with the system, it was causing shorts, so they are having to fix it... AirTran737, Will you please not leave stuff out and tell us exactly what kind of overhauls. I hate it when someone acts like a "spokesperson" and tells us there is a problem, but won't say WHAT the problem is. Be specific please.

The company only advised us that the XM was being deactivated for "Software Updates" but did not elaborate. It has already been reactivated on most aircraft that it was installed with.

No problem, I had 35 hours of audiobooks on my iPod, I was just looking forward to listening to the '80s channel for a while  Cool

Thanks for the info AirTran737 and Travatl. The way the FA worded it made it sound ominous, "overhaul" sounds like an extended downtime for hardware swapout, but a software upgrade isn't all that serious. We do it all the time in the digital TV world.

Seems like this "Overhaul" has been around for a while.

I flew FNT-MCO on N936AT back in late March. XM Installed (The screen was on - but all there was, was a * - as the photo below shows).

Flew N951AT (No XM Installed)
Flew N946AT (XM Installed - Screen on - all there was, was a *)
Flew N267AT (XM 1/2 Installed, the panel was installed though no screen was there, all it said was "XM Coming Soon!").

I think they're advertising that they have XM satellite radio...though I have yet to see any aircraft that has it working...wonder what the issue is.

Heres a photo from N946AT a few weeks ago, i'm sure you saw the same thing:

Flying a plane is no diff. from riding a bicycle. Its just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes. -'Airplane'

You should take the info that Airtran737 has given and be happy with it or approach your request for further information in a different manner. Not saying that this is a factor in this situation but, while many of us work for airlines and often receive information that the public does not hear about, it is not always in the best interest of the company or for the employee to divulge that information. For most airlines when your are hired you sign a non discloser form saying you will not say this or say that. Many people do reveal information but they are very careful about what they say(if they are smart), all it takes is one time to say too much about the wrong issue then the next thing you know your are in the hot seat with your employer. I know we all want to know what's going on but it just cant always be that way. So all in all Airtran737 did a good job of being a "spokesperson", He informed that the system is being upgraded and that they are not operating on all of the a/c that currently have it installed. If there were more to it and he had revealed that he could get into big trouble with his company if they did not want that information public at that time.

My flight in June had XM installed and working. As for your flight back in March I seem to remember that they had installed it on a few planes as of March but the FAA had not yet approved XM's use in the 717 because of a bureaucratic holdup in Washington.

Working in the Digital TV world, I can tell you that digital media technology is still in its infancy, and both digital TV and digital radio still have a lot of bugs. So it's really not surprising to me that satellite radio in commercial aircraft has some kinks to work out.

As of a few days ago, XM Satellite was fully installed in two 737s and 49 717s. Seven of the 717s had the system temporarily deactivated for upgrades.

I have experienced XM on Airtran a couple of times.
The most recent was almost comical as a rather loud younger gentleman was apparently separated from some of his travel mates by a few rows. He was very intent on letting everyone on the plane know what channel he was listening to who the artist was and then often sang out loud. "Hey! Madonna is on channel 8!!!!....Like a virrrrrrgiiiiiiinnnn - ooooohhh yeahhh!!!"
It was so irritating that I had to just laugh. Unfortunately the volume on mine was not loud enough to drown out this guy.
Good news is, it was only an hour flight.

No, I flew them because I had 16 credits in my A-Plus account. And because I just like AirTran and the 717.

When I flew JAX-ATL-PIT last weekend, the XM upgrade announcement was made on the JAX-ATL leg. Although XM was working on the ATL-PIT flight, the signal seemed to be a little intermittent on climb and several pax complained about no reception at all. The f/a's reset the system and it seemed to be working fine the rest of the way. On my return neither aircraft had XM installed.

Arent you sweet?. I didn't pre-draft my statement. If you were to write a letter to AirTran you would get the same response. It is simple and direct. No need to be a dick about it.

Does it matter whether it was down for a software update or a hardware update? Shesh. Maybe they didn't pay their XM bill that month. Doesn't matter. No need to jump AirTran737 like that. You were given the view of an insider on the situation. Take it or leave it.

As of yesterday 53 planes, including 4 737s, had XM with only two 717s deactivated.
