I was able to talk to my aunt this morning. and she said that they where told that there is a Short circuit in one of the lighting units. that unit happened to be some where in the (she was not sure the lave or the galley - thats what you get from people who doesn't know about aviation) back of the airplane. smoke was heavy and caused an alarm to go off from a smoke detector, so my assumption is it was in the lav as they have smoke detectors. they were only an hour and half away from landing, and boston was closer so they landed over there. once they landed, they were surrounded by emergency vehicles, and they were not parked at a gate. they parked, fire fighters and mechanics came aboard the airplane, and they didn't know for one whole hour what is going on, despite them pulling that black box immediatly after they landed. during that hour, my aunt was telling me that they were just taking back and forth a lot of "metal coils" as she claimed, then after that they kept switching the lighting of the cabin on and off. before they left by 30 minuites the captain came on and announced that the problem was a short circuit in one of the lighting unit, and they know that the problem is. it is getting fixed, and they are getting ready to wrap up and leave in 30 minuites.
PHX - i miss spotting
