Smoking Allowed On Mexicana/Aeromexico?

Sun Sep 04, 2005 8:49 am

Just curious. I'm flying from MEX to Merida (MID) next February and want to know if I'll be coughing the whole way there. I did a search of the forums and didn't turn up anything.

Do Mexicana and Aeromexico allow smoking onboard?

Cheers--Jeff

I flew both Mexicana (Click by Mexicana actually) and AeroMexico back in July (between MEX and ZIH) and smoking was certainly not allowed. As far as I know you shouldn't have any problems. Very nice airlines actually, I rather enjoyed them both.

Enjoy your trip!!

Smoking is still allowed in Lufthansa galleys and Germanwings cockpits.  Wink

No joke, I smoked a cigarette in the rear galley of a LH 333 back in January this year after I "busted" a F/A when she was smoking there while I wanted to collect my traditional "2 hours before arriving in NYC meal" which contains a Becks and a Smirnoff. At first I wanted to shout: "Smoke!, Fire!, all of us will die" but then I realized that it is not a good idea to cause a panic in a fully booked A 333 at crusing altitude. Big grin Instead I asked if I can also smoke a cigarette but the F/A told me that it would not a good idea because everyone in the cabin would notice the smoke then, she kindly offered me to take a few hits from her cigarette before she gave me an empty Coke Light can to extinguish the cigarette in the can. Big grin Nice one, really!

In Germanwings cockpits I got offered a ciggy frequently, either from the Captain ot the F/O. Of course I never refused. Big grin

No smoking on Mexicana, as far as I know.

Actually its been at least 10 years since I've seen smoking on any a/c - last was OA from ATH - LHR. I thought it would be nice to sit in that section and enjoy a smoke during the 3 hr flight - it was absolutely disgusting, even for (at the time) a smoker!

Best flight I've had over such a short sector (MIA-CUN) was on Mexicana; full service, very comfortable 319.

Hi Jeff. As far as I know, all airlines in Mexico have now only non-smoking flights. I can't remember how long ago it was still allowed to smoke in Mexican airlines but it was sure many, many years ago. Just for the record, a friend of mine flew Hapag Lloyd from STR to ALC in July 2004 and it was a smoking flight.

As others have mentioned, MX and AM are quite cool! I think they both have very good service. While in general I prefer AM (mostly because of my DL SkyMiles membership), MX has some flights to MID with the A318's, so I would definitely try to get that flight. Can you e-mail me via my profile Jeff?

Smoking is permitted in some rows of all JR (AeroCalifornia) flights. It is the only airline in Mexico allowing to smoke... Actually, there are some people loyal to JR only because they can smoke during the flight.

Normally MX609.

Jeff, no smoking on MX/AM flights, actually if the f/a catch you smoking, when you arrive you will be held by the PFP (Federal Police), depends on the mood of the F/A.

I connected with Mexicana from LAX to Mexico city in 1997 and it was definitely non smoking. My friend took a direct flight codeshared Aeromexico Air France and told me he could smoke ! I have no idea if he told the truth since even then all flights that I managed to take were non smoking already.

No. You'll get far better service than on any US carrier - full meals plus complimentary alc and non-alc drinks throughout the cabin.

Certainly whatever comes from my friend Rojo is quiet accurate, but on this occasion I doubt about your sentence.

I am almost positive that it is forbidden to smoke on any mexican aircraft (commercial service, that is) by orders of the Health Secretary (and that dates back to 1999-2000 I believe, although the airlines themselves have prohibited doing so since before).

But I might be wrong though. I should have that article somewhere....

On a side note, earlier this afternoon I found this page which coincidentally talks about an experience of a group of passengers who wanted to smoke in an AM plane. Funny but thoughtful.

Sorry, only Spanish, scroll down to the third article or click on the link named "Una anécdota para recordar : a 30 mil pies de altura se respira la democracia que no pudo aterrizar en el sureste mexicano"

Here's the page: http://www.larevista.com.mx/ed422/nota5.htm#3

You were allowed to smoke on Cubana when I travelled with them to Holguin (and return from Havana) in 2002 on a tatty old AOM DC10. As someone said earlier, even though I am a smoker, it was quite disgusting. I think it's because the cold air descending from the aircon smothers you in the smoke instead of it wafting away (to annoy other people!) as usual.

Anyone know if you can still smoke on Cubana?

mmmmmmmmm no comments on this.

Definately no smoking as it's Federal Law not to do so. In the case of Aerocalifornia I have absolutely no idea they allowed it. Must be quite uncomfortable.

I realize this is a little of the AM / MX topic, however when looking up the Air India Inflight Information Page, I saw that Cigarettes are available for purchase in their "Sky Bazaar" Duty Free Section (www.airindia.com/inflight/skybazaar). The page was updated June 1, 2003. Can anyone elaborate on this...

Thanks,
