Canadian Airport Codes

Mon May 08, 2000 4:50 am

Why do all(except for 1 or 2) airport IDs in Canada start with Y?

In the early days of Canadian aviation, airports were identified by adding a Y to a city's Canadian National Railway two letter station code. VR for Vancouver, WG for Winnipeg, etc.

Why a "Y"?? Why not an "F" for fly or "A" for air? And where does the Toronto code YZ come from?

The Code for the city of Toronto is not YYZ it is YTO, BUT because there are three airports within the city of Toronto and Pearson was the last of the three to be opened they picked the YZ code to be applied to the Malton (Now Lester B. Pearson) Airport.I don't think there was a reason for it, they just decided to go with YYZ.....

One more thing, all of the airports in Toronto have a Z within their three letter code, usually the last one. YKZ Toronto Buttonville, YTZ Toronto City Center, YZD Downsview AFB, and YYZ Lester B. Pearson INTL
