Why No FCO-South Africa Flights?

Tue Sep 06, 2005 8:28 pm

After questioning the reasons why FCO doesn't have connections to Mexico (apart from charter flights) and no Brazilian carrier, I was thinking about the lack of connections between Rome and South Africa. I think that Alitalia quit the route in 2000, but when did SAA stop flying to/from FCO and why? Does anybody know if there is an interest in re-opening this route?

FCO yields are much lower than MXP. Yields are everything for long-haul flights.

There are many long-haul points with regular MXP service and no FCO service:
BOM, DAM, DEL, DKR, IAD, JNB, KIX, LOS, MIA.

You might notice that the international flights from FCO are almost universally operated by foreign carriers. The Italian government is loathe to give traffic rights to MXP to protect AZ.
