UPS Jet At FedEx Ramp In MEM...

Thu Sep 08, 2005 3:42 pm

So, apparently last saturday a UPS charter aircraft landed in MEM and taxied into their ramp. No one was around to unload it or handle it.

They waited around and ended up having to head over to the FedEx facility and get offloaded by FedEx ramp. Now that's got to be rather embarrassing- and as ironic as anything. Anybody hear anything else about it?

Ah that's way off dude. I remember one time in IND when SDF was shut down we had about 50 UPS planes on the Fedex ramp. They all left at sun rise. That would have made some great pics.
Next time try the old "dirty Sanchez" She'll love it !!!

I don't know anything about the above incident. But before this gets out of hand let me tell you how it really works. As everyone knows FedEx and UPS compete fiercely for business, but behind the scenes they treat each other very civilly and with respect (at least in Air Ops). At remote stations if one has a down airplane and the other has the part needed to get it up, they will loan or sell the part required to get the a/c up. I have seen this happen many times. Neither will take advantage of the others hardship.

Quoting XFSUgimpLB41X (Thread starter):

We would never let a non UPS trained individual unload our cargo, touch or aircraft or even breathe on our aircraft.

All non UPS employees who set foot on our ramp (i.e. fuel etc) have to go thru a UPS training program. So as far as Fedex unloading a UPS aircraft, it would never happen.

Also, that is pure bonafide teamster work being completed by non union employees..

Nice sentiment, but it happened regardless.

Who do you think works the aircraft when ever they would come into TOL during the holiday rush to handle all the shipments by Hickory Farms going out? UPS? LOL Try BAX. They contract it out...just like any other city where they need to. Don't be so naive.

If BAX was contracted to do the work they would be trained and certified by UPS to do it. The point is we don't send aircraft to a city and taxi it around the airfield looking for people to unload it.

I'm not sure about the air ops side as I work in ground ops....but we're very civil and friendly to each other. Everytime we pass one another on the road we give a friendly wave. We're all out there trying to earn a living...so why do you need hostility???

As for this thread...it was obviously unloaded by FedEx personnel....so why the complaining???

It was not obviously unloaded by FEDEX. The original poster says "apparently". UPS aircraft would never be unloaded by fedex employees in a situation like that. He says the UPS aircraft landed and there was nobody around to unload the aircraft. Stuff like taht does not happen...

Why would fedex unload a UPS aircraft?? Is Fedex going to process the UPS packages? If there was nobody to unload the aircraft there probably wasn't anyone to unload the ULD's into the system. So therefore what would be the point of unloading it?

The poster is obviously wrong it never happened and this has been confirmed.

In business sometimes competitors help each other, its a fact of life.

If you are in denial about this thats fine, but your posts are so far away from reality it almost seems like you are just trying to be silly.

Um.......Squad55..you might want to tone it down. 5X here, and yeah, it would happen in a heartbeat if necessary. We work with FedEx all the time, its a fact of life. Things break, (even the system sometimes) and we depend on each other to make it happen. Its like that throughout the industry...c'mon.......everyone knows that.

Squad55.....

Dude...relax a little bit. XFSU is a very reliable guy....why the hell would he make it up?

I've even made pickups at the local UPS station(I'm a courier).....so what? Does that not happen either?

Squad55, just an additional comment - FedEx bailed us out recently, just as we do for them on occasion. If it weren't for them, the flight wouldn't have gone anywhere. Fact. Its confirmed.  Smile

from what i've seen and heard, only the management of UPS and FedEx have any animosity towards the other...i've heard both FedEx and UPS pilots both say they don't feel anything against the other guy, they're just trying to earn a living and fly airplanes.

Darn. I forgot one detail. I'll give you a hearty handshake and a slap on the back if you can guess who did the initial training for 5X pilots and mechanics on the A300. Tick tock tick tock...........

No, but they can unload the ULDs, arrange them into strings of UPS dollies and drop them on the UPS ramp. That is, if K-loaders work on both UPS and FedEx aircraft. Only a guess  Smile

Hey -- I work in the Courier / Overnight package industry, and you'd be surprised how many packages get shared amongst UPS/Fedex/Purolator here in Canada..

UPS and Fedex strategically cannot reach everywhere overnight, yet their customers request it..

We carry UPS and Fedex freight on our planes *all* the time.. sometimes to the tune of thousands of packages.

So it wouldn't surprise me!

Looks like it may have been an error though.

News flash to you. UPS doesn't have their own rampers in every station. They have bonafide $7.00 a hour Evergreen Eagle employees working their flights here in PDX.

It is very common place for both UPS and FedEx to help each other out. Back when there was the anthrax scare at different Post offices UPS allowed FedEx to unload its cargo at their ramp with their equipment of ORF. The FedEx ramp is beside the USPS ramp and that side of the ramp was completely evacuated until Hazmat cleared it. Turned out to be powder or something like that.

On another occasion that was documented with pictures in the signals pamphlet (if you work for FedEx, then you know what I'm referring to) UPS paid FedEx to deliver UPS store signs. Because they didn't fly heavy weights (packages over 150 lbs) then, they shipped them via FedEx. Everyone around the ramp got a pretty big kick out of it!

AOG and Ramprat are correct. Square you are misinformed. AOG FDX even provided Sim time for the intital A300 instruction but I seem to remember they kicked us out. FDX and UPS actually do have a pretty good releationship away from sales and management. AOG, I thought you use to get 2 A300's in Buf? I see 2 75's and 1 A300. Never mind I'm thinking BOS.

Yeah you guys are all right, I work for DHL now after years with FedEx at ONTR and some brief time at UPS. Everybody gets along pretty well. I have had to call upon my former colleagues at FedEx numerous times to help me out with my DHL flight and I have still helped with FedEx flights and I have been with DHL for a little over 6 months.
