JetBlue Making IAD A West Coast Focus City?

Sun Sep 11, 2005 12:21 am

With FlyI cutting or having already cut SJC, SAN and LAX, does JetBlue have a chance at making IAD a decent-sized focus city for flights to the West? They already run 4x (3x/winter) to LGB, 3x (2x/winter) to OAK, and 1x to SAN and SMF.

The three Cali routes were cut due to a combination of low yields, high landing fees, and high fuel prices. I don't see why LAS, SEA and SFO should bypass these reasons. JetBlue certainly has better yield management (no initiation of $69 fares to the West), so I see them being able to make these routes a success.

So, in other words, can JetBlue make IAD a decent-sized operator for flights to the West? I certainly see them adding flights to BUR, SJC, and SEA and LAS if FlyI drops those too.

I appreciate any thoughts.

haha, with your title i thought you were implying that IAD was on the west coast...

JetBlue possibly could open it up for west coast pax at IAD, but United has the monopoly on most of the west coast routes out of IAD, with non stops to all the aforementioned cities, at a relatively high freq (more than once/day). it would be somewhat difficult for them to break into that market with United's presence the way it is at IAD without drastically lower fares (like Indy Air tried to do...)

I don't know about a big focus city but if they do it how they normally do, and first start with a red-eye to LAS, SEA, and SJC and then build from there. I could see LAS going up to 2X if they do well and the other staying at 1X for a while and eventually up SJC to 2X. All depends on how hard UA will fight them on the routes and how many people choose Blue.

No, that is why Indy said they were cut. The real reason they were cut is because Indy has in insanely high CASM and cannot make money on anything.

I could see B6 starting IAD-BUR and maybe IAD-SJC. I could also see IAD-PDX too, and adding a second IAD-SAN.

I have heard talk of IAD-SEA and IAD-PDX red-eyes possibly in the works. Nothing set in stone, but a good indication to go by. This would further utilize the a/c sitting overnight in IAD. Just what I've overheard from senior mgmt here in PDX, so it may just be wishful thinking. Only time will tell on this one.

So you are implying that their are not outrageously expensive fuel prices, that they west coast is cheap to fly to, and people are willing to pay top dollar to fly? C'mon, get a clue.

B6 should start these routes because there is demand for them, at a low fare, which they can provide. DH averaged about $110.00 each way not including tax which could be feasible since B6 is hedged well, UA isn't, B6 already has good name recogintion in the west, DH didn't, and already have their own ground crews in these citys, so they wouldn't really have any additional costs in those cities.

I wonder why they didn't consider BWI. Its cheaper to operate out of than IAD and Reagan and I live only 20 minutes from it Smile

Not a bad idea...give WN a run for their money. WN definetly wouldnt be happy with this move since they know B6 offers MUCH better service than they do......

If jetBlue did make IAD a focus city, it won't take long before people start to realize how much better jetBlue's service is compared to United. And sooner than later, you'll have United operating international flights out of IAD only.........

Three carriers to IAD? UA, AS, and B6? DH flies here now, but for how much longer, I don't know. UA routes people to IAD for international connections, plus handles ground service for B6 in SEA and PDX. I also believe that AS would fight B6 very intensely for IAD flights, since it has a few nonstops there, plus to DCA as well.

PDX on the other hand could be interesting.

I tell ya, if B6 goes IAD-SEA, I will be sure to make it on their flight during my next run to the east coast. They announced BOS-SEA the other day, which is a great start!

Why BUR or ONT? Is it just me or are these cities not too close to LGB? Or is this in response to maxed out operations at LGB? Gawd, the day B6 becomes a major player along the west coast routes (ie LGB-SEA et al)...

B6 in my eyes has a better product than WN. However, while it may still attract WN pax, the competition may just be too much since BWI is a huge city for WN.

It'd be cool to have a new B6 destination from SEA... I'd rather see LGB than IAD though... like some California destinations because I'd choose them over AS and WN any day!

I always thought that red eye flight can originate on the west coast only, not the other way.

Quite true. However, the plane has to positioned to the West Coast, usually with an evening flight. Then, the flight back would be a redeye.
