Atlas 742 & Skyservice 767: Written Off Or Repaired?

Mon Sep 12, 2005 2:11 am

What has become out of Skyservice´s 767-300 and Atlas Air´s 747-200SF N808MC which both had had landing accidents a few months back?
Both were rumoured to be write-offs. But I´ve seen the Atlas freighter in its shiny new paint just a few weeks ago in Düsseldorf, in one piece and far from looking like something that´ll be cut apart soon (though its Atlas oldest Jet being built in 1976). The Skyservice 763 had suffered a severe crack in the fuselage and damage to its landing gear, something that doesn´t sound good at all, especially for a pax jet.

Atlas 742 & Skyservice 767: Written Off Or Repaired?

I do NOT know any official information, but what I can definitely report on, is that the plane has had a temporary structure (hangar) built around it, and Boeing has indeed started working on repairing the structure.

What I've heard as RUMOUR is that there is much more considerable damage than Boeing initially thought. What this means, no one but the official people and/or Skyservice only knows at this point.

Again, nothing official, but what I've heard.

Thanks,

The Atlas 742 is supposed to be a writeoff. Here it is in June:

Skyservice´s 767-300

As seen on Flight 5G560 Damage Photos the damage is serious. There is a law suit ( go to 7) at the bottom) from the passengers, so I would guess that the plane will be at PUJ until everything has been solved both in court and from the aviation authorities. Most likely the plane will be parted out and what's left will be scrapped.
U can also follow the case on Skyservice Flight 560 Class Action Lawsuit

Thank you very much for the info regarding the Skyservice jet.

As for the Atlas Air 742F: I´ve seen it in person and pretty much closeup parked in the Cargo area AFTER this fire exercise shown above, and besides the engine damage it looked fine to me. The only reason for not repairing it should be that its already 29 years old, though its new coat of paint makes it look a lot younger.

Most likely the [Skyservice 767] will be parted out and what's left will be scrapped.

Most likely? How come? I'd say it's most likely to enter service again, given the fact that there are a number of previous cases very similar to this one, and those airplanes were successfully repaired. I don't mean any disrespect, but I believe you are incorrect, that's all  Wink

You are right Captain. More likely I was too fast.  guilty
A Lufthansa 747 was bended last year during maintenance at FRA. The plane is back in service after repair. So hopefully C-GLMC will be back if the damage is not to big.

It will be a matter of age vs. value if the Skyservice 763 will be repaired or not. Neutrally looking the damage to the 763 is more severe than the damage to the Atlas freighter. But the freighter is at least twice as old so probably not worth investing in it anymore.
The cracked LH freighter is 10 years younger than the Atlas 742F and besides that I think that an important factor of why it has been repaired was that it happened inside LHs own repair facility and was done by LHs own technicians, certainly also as a kind of showcase of its own capability. The Skyservice 763 though must be repaired in a relatively remote faraway place. Practically it will be vastly more expensive to repair this theoretically similar damage.

Don't forget the Atlas 742 also recieved some pretty extensive damage to theskins of the forward fuselage in the incident as well. I think it was the replacement of these panels (6 in total IIRC) plus repairing/replacing all of the underlying structures that caused the scrapping decision to be made. For a while the only question was will it be scrapped at DUS, or would it be repaired to fly to the UK for scrapping.

Ray, Skyservice has two 767's. C-GLMC is the one down in PUJ. C-GJJC is the second, and is currently in operation flying out of YYZ.

LMC IS being repaired piece by piece, frame by frame, a very long slow process but it is being fixed in its makeshift hanger down in PUJ...i am not sure of its scheduled return date to MY TRAVEL but JJC is due to go back after the Italy flights are done for the year

True, LMC IS being repaired. Boeing is still down there and LMC will see its day again. It's a relatively young aircraft at 10yrs or so.
Where am I going, and why am I in this handbasket?

Hey there
The 767 for Sky is being repaired as I type this. then goes back to My Travel for the winter, and hopefully for good. JJC is supoused to be going out west this winter for YYC and YVR flying. Not to sure as to what the goings on are out that way as I haven't seen anything written on paper.

Hey,

So Skyservice is only having one 767 for the winter season? I heard that Signature Vacations will be bringing two 767's this winter season from First Choice, would Skyservice be utilizing these planes?

Regards,
