Tue May 09, 2000 7:33 am

Hello fellow aviation people!!! I have a big question?! Is Delta really gettinng 747s? Have they even given a "maybe" or a "possible" or even a "one day"??? Is there anywhere I can read about it? Or anyone I can ask? Thank ya!!

It seems from a recent article that a forum member read that they are in discussions with Boeing with the acquisition of more 777s and their first 747s since the early 1970s.

I remember the two 747 100's DELTA had in the early 70's, and they used them on the Dulles (Wash., DC) to Atlanta runs. Even though I was a little kid, I remember those days like yesterday.

I'd love it if Delta got more 777s and 747s. They could pull a United and use the 747s exclusively on Pacific flights, as well as some 777s. The 767-300/400 ER and 777 would be used on Atlantic, except for high-density routes that might have to use the 747.

GO DELTA!

I sure would love to see a Delta 747! That would be so awesome! Especially a 774 in the 2000 colors! If anyone finds anything about it please let me know.

I would have thought the 777-300 could assume a 747-like role on the Pacific since it is nearly equal in size 747-400. Also, the 300ER would be available with RR Trent engines keeping commonality with existing 777's.

My favorite airline and my fovorite aircraft. This would be amazing, because ATL does not have many 747 visits. I doubt this may happen, several of my friends (that are Delta mechanics) say that Delta most likely end up with extended range 777's.

Delta is definately the best of the "big three." They should get some 744's just for the image.... But looking at their fleet, the 773 seems more logical. Oh well.

Yeah... I would have thought that too. And I bet that will be the only thing keeping them from not getting it! I guess it's cheaper to maintain the 777 compared to the 747. So, maybe they souldn't get it. I mean, I WANT them to but I wouldn't if I had to make the decision. :-(

Remember though...
The 747-400ER will have more range and capacity than the 777-300ER. Also, on the 744 you can have RRs, while on the 773ER it is GE only.

First of all!!!... the 764 will NOT have more capacity than the 773ER. I am not really sure about the range, I'll check into that but it will not have the capacity of the 777-300ER! Also, what is "RR" and "GE"? The 747 would have 2 more engines to keep up with than the 777. Also, there is not a dramatic difference in size between the 777 and 747. The 764 is going to be the same WIDTH (or circumerence) as the other 767s. It may be longer, but you have to remember how much wider the 777 is. I would love to see a Delta 747-400 but I don't think that they NEED it! Any thoughts???

Cargo

Wed May 10, 2000 8:19 am

Would increased cargo capacity influence Delta's decision to choose 747s over 777s? How big of a factor is that?

Dustweek,
Howdy! Like I said. I do not think that there is a big enough size difference for Delta to get choose 747 over 777. Have you been inside the 777? It's pretty darn big!!

Exactly...
The 747-400
length: 232ft
height:63.7ft
span: 211ft
accommodation(typical): 416 (three class)

The 777-300
lenght: 209ft
Height: 60.75ft
span: 200ft
accommodation(typical): 386 (three class)

Just think about that! What would you do? Maybe if they just bought like 1... you know, kinda for show.
I think that would be the thing to do! You know another thing I'd like to see is an A340. Now, lets not even get into that because that is a another story! But anyway... any thoughts????

The 777-300 is curently the longest commercial aircraft at 242'4" (taken from boeing.com), which makes it longer than the 774.

i think they will go 773 over the 744 because of the price difference and the range is pretty close so i would think of it more economic. If they do decide 744, i would like to see what AA,UA and CO do.

The decision may also depend on what type of deals Boeing will give to Delta. Delta is one of Boeing's best customers.

That will be terrific if Delta purchases some 747-400s! They need a high capacity plane like the 747 to handle some of the busy European & Pacific routes to the Far East and it can be purchased with engines from the 3 manufacturers (P&W 4000, RR RB211 & GE CF6), vs. 1 (GE90) with the 777X.

I good reason for Delta to purchase the 747-400 is that they can option for either the P&W 4000 or GE CF6 because they have these engines on their widebody 767s & MD-11s to share the same spare engine components.

Delta is Cool without the 744s. I mean, the 777 is AWESOME! It's huge, new, etc... They DO NOT need a 747. Now... I'd love to see it but... you know, HEY! Umm... Let's take a vote! Who thinks they will get it?

DeltaMan,

It may interest you to know that the 777-300 actually carries more cargo than the 747-400. 7,552 cu ft. for the 773 vs .5332/ 6025 cu. ft. for the 744.

There is a 10% that Delta may Aquire some 747-200 and 400 planes from Northwest Airlines and the -400 from Boeing, They will probably NOT get them because they have the newer 777 and do not need the 747.

Delta seems to be able to fill a 767-300 from ATL to MIA all the time. Would it surprise you if they could fill a 747-400, too? It wouldn't surprise me.

Some of Delta's heavy routes are REALLY heavy.

Once again, in this industry, don't try to figure out what the executives are thinking, because it can drive you mad.

That would be quite awesome, I've always thought delta could use a few 747s for their LAX-NRT and PDX-NRT routes. Though, I still think this is highly unlikely, in light of their existing attachment to the 777 platform (also a good replacement for the md-11's).

It would surprise me to think that Delta would need a larger aircraft than the MD-11 on Pacific routes because their Load Factor is only 60something percent this month for Pacific ops compared to NWs almost 80%.

Dl's load factor must be lower this month than in other recent months where it climbed past 70%. I'm not a big NW fan, but 80% is very respectable on t-p.

Hey, USAirways737, could you recommend a site to find the most current load factors right when they are released. thanks.

Just adding my 2 cents...

Some planes and liveries were made for each other.

ATA and the L1011

National and the 752

Continental and the 738

Delta NC and the 744...

Right here. On the main page of Airliners.net in the news section they have the LFs every time they are released. Most airlines have released them already so you might have to back up a few pages but they will be there.

TWAL1011, I agree with ya. But I just don't think they really need a lot of them. Maybe a couple. They could difentally use them from ATL-MCO. That route is always full. They fly the 777, 767, and L-1011s on that route. I know it's not long distance but it's a plane full. They would be a pretty good replacement for the MD-11. Yes, continental777, The valuejet crash is very sad. Well... I just can't decide about this whole Delta 747 thing. Who knows... the future will tell!
