Delta's New Colors

Tue May 09, 2000 8:06 am

Hi !!! is Delta really going thru with the new ccolor scheme? I know they had a lot of criticism for it and that they are still taking delivery and repainting planes into the 1998 style livery. So, are they going thru with the new scheme or will they keep the scehme launched in 1998? The777Man

I've seen several variations of the new livery on both paper and shirts. Some have a navy blue bottom where the silver is on the new one. As far as I know only N863DA has the new livery. A 737-800 & 757-200 were just delivered a few weeks ago, still in the old livery.

There is a 757 in the paint hangar at ATL that will be the first a/c repainted in the 2000 livery. The a/c (don't know the no# yet) should role out in a few days. Finally, another ship in the new style.

I used to hate it but it has grown on me just like the TWA colors.

Love the changes to the logo, don't care for the tail. Personally, I think it would look better with the updated delta (the triangle, not the lettering) centered on the tail. The new tail looks like some country's tri-colored flag flying in the wind and doesn't communicate any aspect of Delta's identity (in my humble opinion).

TWfirst, just a little trivia--the triangle logo of DL is affectionately known as a widget among the DL faithful--hence my username. I like the new logo a lot and you have to see the tail in person--it's quite stunning.

Yep...there is a 757 being painted in the new colors as we speak. The N-number is N624DL...

Delta is already showing the new livery in their in-flight magazine, SKY with a small announcement about the change. The fleet description page also shows the new livery. just an FYI

DL Widget Head: Here all this time I thought you were some kind of techno-geek or in procurement or something for DL (tinkering with widgets, ordering widgets, or something like that), and it's merely that your head is pointy    (God, I crack myself up)

I do agree with you on the tail: it IS beautiful. The problem I see from a marketing and brand management perspective is it doesn't communicate anything that the general public easily relates to Delta's identity. The justification for the design (as stated on the Delta website) described Delta wanting to communicate more of a customer-responsive, touchy-feely... flowy... attitude, and the logo update and new livery (especially the tail, with the three colors used being the three colors used in the old logo and script) were meant to embody this. However, Delta's identity has always been represented by the "Widget," and now they're shifting to pure color communication, and they haven't established a strong tie-in to these colors, nor to the flowy flag kinda thang.

If you looked down a row of planes at an airport, and all you could see were the tails (and you were a regular schmo who didn't know about liveries and logos and stuff like that), would you be able to easily pick out which plane was Delta's? If you saw it coming in for a landing at night with the tail lit up, and you were driving down the interstate, would you immediately recognize it as Delta's plane? I don't think so, and that's a lost chance for Delta to get on someone's mind, which is the whole point of brand identity and equity.

I have a question..... On Delta's website they have plastic model Delta planes for purchase, all in the 1997 livery. They had a MD-88 in the 1997 livery. I thought Delta wasnt going to update the md-80's and 727's, yet they had the models of those planes in the 1997 livery. Has anyone seen 727's or MD-80 series aircraft in the 1997 livery???? thanks

TWFirst, your points are well taken. I would prefer to have seen the new "widget" on the tail and perhaps some other scheme along the fuselage but, alas, they (upper management) did not ask us employees for our input. Instead, they saw fit to pay Landor and Assoc. millions to come up with the 2000 livery. I would have come up with something for free or maybe an "adaboy". Oh well, we'll just have to see if the new scheme will do everything they said it will. By the way, I'm still cracking up over here from your coments above about widgets.

Well hell, maybe I should get a job with Landor then! I don't think I'd want to move to Atlanta though. (Fort Lauderdale maybe..)

You know, another thing that cracked me up was the explanation on DL's website as to why they dropped "Air Lines" from the script....

(and I'm paraphrasing) "...our research showed our customers just referred to us as Delta and the Air Lines wasn't necessary... blah blah blah"

MY GOD, NO. HOW COULD THAT POSSIBLY BE??? YOU MEAN.... PEOPLE ACTUALLY REFER TO YOUR AIRLINES AS "JUST" DELTA??? AND THEY'RE NOT CONFUSED THAT IT MIGHT BY DELTA FAUCETS.... OR DELTA DELTA DELTA SORORITY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT??? I JUST NEVER WOULD'VE GUESSED. THAT'S JUST TOTALLY FRICKIN AMAZING.           Oh well, the new widget is cool.

In response to TWFirst  I would think that in a casual conversation, people wouldnt refer to any airlines as their full name, it just isnt needed.... "Hey, what airline are you flying to JFK?", "I am flying Continental Airlines whose flights are codeshared by America West Airlines in the west. At ORD i will connect on United Airlines and fly to EWR whose hub airline is Continental Airlines". People just dont talk like that. Delta is simply intelligent   they still are my favorite....

In answer to your question, yes Delta will be repainting all of the MD88's and many of the 727s as well. The MD88's are gonna be around for quite a while since most were delivered to DL between 1988 and 1991. They got another ten years on them at least. Even some of the 727s will be around till 2004-05 so they need to be repainted too.

I can't help it, but I associate the tail design with the flag of Serbia (red, blue, white). Well, DL has bright blue at the bottom instead of white, but still it reminds me very much of the Serbian flag. Any other input? Why in the world would DL want to put this design on its planes? Other than that, it's not bad.

Many Thanks for the info!!! I agree that the DL widget on the tail would have been very nice but otherwise I like the 1997/98 livery a lot better. The777Man

I respect those one who like it, but to be honest, I find it awful. It's so boring. There is definitely a new tendency that consists in creating all-white fuselage paint schemes. Basically, all-white fuselages can look great, but it has to be integrated in some appropriated design, and it's not the case with the Delta's new livery. By "appropriated design", I mean there's a need to compensate for the large amount of white by adopting a "billboard" sized typeface (for the name of the airline). Markings on the Delta's new livery are too small, then there's a "white sea" and a tail that I really don't like (the convergence of the three color bands, the colors themselves, etc.). I hope they will find something better in the next years.

Regards,

CharterFlyer

I miss the cheatline (I think that's what it's called. The line running through the fuselage)

Someone stated that another option was have the bottom painted dark blue. As much I dislike the new liverly, painting the bottom blue(ala UA,TWA,BA, and everybody else) would save the fuselage from looking...well dull.

I still wished they would kept the old,old livery with the widget proudly up front next to the cockpit. And just went with a metallic body underneath the dark blue and red thin stripe. You gotta admit, that would look classy. But I forgot, former CEO Ron Allen took DL class and trashed it.
