How Can I Overlay Approach Plates On Google Earth?

Mon Sep 12, 2005 10:51 pm

I've seen an example somewhere where someone put an approach plate as an overlay over Google Earth.

Anyone can tell me how to do that?

Thanks

Chris, unfortunately that is not possible.. Approach plates are NOT drawn to scale.. If you were to overlay them, it would be extremely innacurate..

Sorry

Hmmm.... let's assume I was happy with the fact that they are not to scale. Just how does it work in Google Earth?

I'd imagine it's done outside of Google Earth -- i.e. you capture the image, send it to something like photoshop, and then do the overlay?

Or did you actually see the approach overlay inside Google Earth with your own eyes?

Hmm, not sure what you mean, but if you give me your e-mail address I can send you the file that I have seen. It shows the ILS approach into SFO's runway 28R (or was it 28L?. never mind).

Get the image of the approach plate, scale it as desired, find edges and use as a transparent layer on top of a googlemap.

This image is for Millville NJ, one I found on the internet.

Excuse the quality, but I've had a bandwith message from photobucket so the image is compressed a bit.

If you are talking about overlaying them into Google Maps itself, I strongly recommend reading the basics and the documentation first. While the methods above would certainly suffice for static images, if you happened to have any to-scale imagery that you wish to dynamically imbed into a Google Map, this is the tool to use.
