John Travolta's 747

Tue Sep 13, 2005 8:19 am

Yes, you heard right, 747. Apparently my instructor in Intro to Aviation class said John Travolta owns a 747 alongside the 707. Can anybody confirm? Pics?

Not that I know of. He did complete Qantas' 747-400 pilot training, though.

Not to my knowledge, Didn't Kelly Preston buy him a Zeppelin or something crazy for his birthday last year? There was talk on here they wished he would buy a 747SP but as far as I know that was just talk on here. He is rated on the 747, maybe that is what your instructor was thinking of.

John Travolta owns two airplanes, a B-707-138, and a Gulfstream G-V. He parks both at his home in Florida. The last picture of the house, B-707, and G-V I saw left no additional ramp space to park another large airplane. Unless he builds more ramp space, he cannot park a B-747SP, or any other large airplane at his house.

Do you mean that Travolta has a runway next to his house??? or that his house is located near an airport?

He is wrong.... the biggest airplane John owns is his 707.

He lives in Ocala, FL, and has a house right at the end of a private runway. It's one of those fly-in estates ...there are other houses there also. He has a fly-in every few weeks/months, so rent yourself a C172 and have a look!

Yes, indeed. How cool is that?
The development is called Jumbolair Aviation Estates. It's located 6 mile from Ocala Fl, and has it's own private 7550 x 210 ft runway. There are taxiways throughout the development in which a home owner can taxi right to their front door. (see picture above)

As we do here on this site, ask your instructor for his source of information. Then ask, "Have YOU actually seen this plane?" If so, where & when?

I am betting his source will be something like "His brother-in-laws-teenage son's best freind's girlfreind's father's boss's son who knows everything there is about flying and thinks he's an armchair airline CEO."

The website says the runway is 7,550'. Is that long enough for any variant of the 747? What is the largest plane that could land there?

His 707 is ex-Qantas and painted in the Qantas 60s livery. That may be why he wanted the QF 747SP.

You sure the instructor wasn't thinking of Arnold Governator? He owns a 747, but not for private use. He is only the lease holder and it is a business venture.

It's not so much the length of the runway as it is the thickness of it. That runway looks like an asphalt surface, a 747 would just sink right into it.
Back in the late 60's, early 70's a TI DC-9 did an RON at ELD. It had a asphalt ramp. In the morning when the crew arrived, they were greeted with the sight of their DC-9 sunk up to the axles in the asphalt. They tried and tried to drive it out, but it was stuck in there good. They had to lift it out to free it!

Even if he had one and the space, he doesn't have the support equipment for a 747. I'd venture to guess his 707 probably spends most of its time at a real airport too.

There was an article (with an interview with JT) in which he stated that he was offered (from Qantas) a 747-200 with a couple of spare engines, but didn't take them up on that because of this and that, or whatever. I forgot which magazine it was from but one for the enthusiast like Airways, Airliners, etc..

I know that John Travolta got to be pretty well loaded to be able to afford a B707..but could it just be that a B747 is too damn expensive? I mean, how cheap can it be? I would bet a couple of hundred million dollars would sink into a investment like that. (And while he might have the actual money it's a big step to put them all into a over the top aircraft).

John Travolta is living every a.netters dream.

He has his own aircraft (I would personally love to own a 737-200), and If I'm not mistaken the architecture of his house is designed similar to a 60's airport building.......

How does he get the plane out? Does the airport provide pushbacks from their houses? Because if he were to reverse out of there the house would be on for quite a surprise, and there's always the risk of FOD...right?

No, most of those fly-ins are all uncontrolled. There are more than maybe 50-100 homes in those anyway, meaning that at most maybe 100 planes, mostly Cessna class. And not all of them are going to be flying at the same time.

There is really no need for a tower, uncontrolled airfield flight rules suit this spot just fine...

Here is a link with the AirNav data for the airstrip off of the Jumbolair Website that would suggest there is no tower, cause I know you like data proof:

I've actually flown over Jumbolair a few times going to and from Orlando Executive. Usually in a Bonanza and it's a pretty impressive sight to see that runway and the airplane parked next to a house. The first time I was simply scanning below and was surprised, but the second time we took photos.

Nothing decent turned out, as I used my digital, but I felt cooler just for seeing it.  Wink

Having flown over it several times as well, it was interesting to watch the construction once it was known that he was moving there.
The picture of Jumbolair is somewhat dated. There is now a taxiway from the runway to Travolta's house, along with a long gate that crosses the taxiway into his parking area.
They (Jumbolair) has a fly-in breakfast (or atleast they used to) the first Sunday of the month. It is quite the feast at something like $25.00 a head.

I recall that while John has a private pilot certificate, he is not type rated on the 707. So, has needs a qualified crew if it ever flies. I saw this in the magazine article that featured his round the world trip in the 707. He does wear a captains uniform, and is allowed to actually fly the a/c, although cannot act as PIC. Of course, when the a/c lands, everyone thinks that he is flying it, and the real "captain" keeps a low profile  Smile. Unless things have changed since that article, several years ago now I think.

That G-V is in fact an early serial number G-II with winglets and mods. What is impressive in this day and age of spiraling fuel costs is NOT the acquisition costs of the two aircraft which are pretty well depreciated, but the fuel cost as well as the crew cost. John always flies with some well qualified type-rated Captains wherever he is aboard the Gulfstream or the short body 707-138.

As far as his Qantas training, Travolta went through Boeing 747-400 F/O class. And I agree he lives a pretty ideal lifestyle!

actually John does fly it, as it meets the requirements he does have a full crew including flight attendants, all in era airline garb, that flys with him. He does have a 707 Type rating, search his info through the FAA, as all of us who have certificates of any kind, most likely they didn't pay the money to have the info blocked, whats the point.

John Travolta's daily schedule.

Wake up next to Kelly Preston.

Have whatever he wants for breakfast.

Start up his 707.

Fly whereever he wants.

Go to bed with Kelly Preston.

I'd just like to say that, other than making crappy movies all the time, I would like to be John Travolta.

Anyway...serious question: Can a private 707 be flown by just one person? I doubt it, but I'd figure I would ask.

No, you have to have the minimum crew per the airplane type certificate data sheet. The entire crew must be certified and maintain currency. The aircraft must also be on an approved maintenance program.
