Major Air Route Closed--No Reason Given

Wed Sep 14, 2005 7:47 am

A temporary flight restriction has been issued by the FAA for a major North Pacific air corridor, covering air routes R-222, R-580 and A-590...

Whoa, this is serious. Wouldn't this affect many trans-Pacific long haul flights?

I wonder what's going on. An unannounced SDI test (unpublicized because they'll probably miss)?

Could it be to do with the air station on Shemya island and its involvement with the national missile defence. Looks to be fairly close by.

If I was reading this in North Korea I'd be more than curious as to the reason.

How will FAA enforce this no fly zone?

Regards.

My thoughts as well. Looking at some random flight plans to NRT today from North America I found flights flying filed on R-580 in the area supposed in the TFR. While this doesnt necessarily mean there is no flight restrictions there, it adds extra doubt in my mind.

Is there a FAA source we can look at that might have the info to prove/disprove?

Royal,

If you can access PAZA (Anchorage FIR) notams, you'll see the closures. It's due to military activity and it's not all day/night. The times shouldn't impact the eastbounders from the Orient to Canada/US, haven't studied the westbound effect. Happens routinely, though not as much up in this area as say the west coast of CA.

Routes are opened and closed for various reasons eg: volcanic ash, military operations, flight testing etc.

Hmmm... Bush has a speech on Thursday. Maybe we're hitting N. Korea and China is helping us out.

Also, we must consider the fact space weather forecasts note the very strong possibility of a solar flare or coronal mass ejection hitting the Earth sometime within the next week or so. As such, to protect airliners flying at altitude aviation authorities often close routes at higher latitudes to protect planes against excessive radiation exposure, especially its effects on passengers and airplane avionics.

Look at this link: https://www.notams.jcs.mil/distribution/centerQuery.html

It's pretty clear all it's nothing more than a military exercise. Not solar flare activity or chem trails.

The info is there all people have to do is look for it....

Could it have anything to do with this?
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) -- The Air Force early Wednesday successfully conducted this year's final test of an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile, officials said.

The Minuteman 3's dummy warhead traveled more than 4,000 miles in about 30 minutes, hitting a predetermined target at the Kwajalein Atoll in the western chain of the Marshall Islands.

The 1:01 a.m. operation tested the missile system's reliability and accuracy. It was the fourth missile test of 2005; the third occurred a week ago.
