American Applies For JFK-Cabo San Lucas

Wed Sep 14, 2005 10:10 pm

American Airlines applied to US DOT for authority to launch service between New York JFK and San Jose del Cabo on Feb. 4. It proposes two weekly 757 services during the high season and one weekly service during the low season.

I believe Delta applied for this route a few days back.

And that's the only reason why AA applied for this route  Wink . Has already been discussed btw.

Actually, I'm surprise AA only applied for JFK-Cabo. DL applied for a few Mexican routes out of Kennedy, I was thinking AA would match it.

My question is who will end up gertting the route? It seems that DL has more interest in expanding at JFK by applying for more new routes to Mexico and Latin America than AA, so wouldn't the DOT grant the authority to DL over AA? Granted I could be a bit bias in by statements but I don't believe that they are too far off base.

That's the $64,000 question.

AA has been growing internationally at JFK lately, albeit not as much as DL has been growing overall, but the DOT doesn't award routes based on the number of outstanding route applications at any given moment.

Personally, I think AA would have a better chance of making the route work -- they have a much stronger presence on New York-Latin America routes than DL, and have much more traffic from New York to Mexico/Caribbean resorts. In addition, AA is proposing 2 weekly 757s during the peak winter season, while DL is proposing only one.

Probably because SJD offers much better yield potential than the other routes that DL has applied for.

Apart from JFK-NRT, what routes would that be? I'm not really up-to-date on AA's presence at JFK.

Only that the DOT doesn't really care about frequencies. If that were the case, the DOT would have long awarded MCO-CUN to DL, because DL offered daily 738 service, vs FL's daily 717 service, vs NK's saturday-only MD-80 service.

Where? the only new flight announced was to Newcastle. Cabo San Lucas, if they get it, is just to keep Delta from getting it.

Delta is growing much faster at JFK than American, at least with their number of flights. Delta has more flights to JFK than any other airline, but only 3rd in passengers behind JetBlue and American. Too many RJ flights.

BRU, ZRH, YHZ, YYZ and NCL have been launched in the recent past or will soon be launched.

Please forgive my ignorance, but Is there a bilateral that says only one airline can be awarded a particular route to Mexico? Is there a possibility that both would get the route allocation?

Best,

BRU & ZRH has been flying for years. YHZ has been in operation at least a year. So, the only recent launch was YYZ 3 months ago.

The treaty only allows two US airlines on each US-Mexico route, currently CO flies year round from EWR to Los Cabos. EWR is part of the NYC market so only one more US airline can fly to Cabo from JFK or EWR, so it's either AA or DL but not both.

That's why AA can't fly to Mexico City (CO, DL) from JFK and DL can't fly to Cancun from JFK (AA, CO).
