When Do You Think We'll See The 777-100?

Tue May 09, 2000 12:23 pm

How about it? Read about it early on but haven't heard it mentioned lately.

Also, no carriers so far have opted for hinged wing tips. Waiting to see that too.

I doubt we will see either variant any time soon. the hinged wing tips add weight, but in fact aren't very useful anywhere. AA insisted on their inclusion as an option, but notice that even they didn't order them. The 777-100 was going to be the long range version IIRC, but those crazy engineers at Boeing managed to find a way to make the -200 longer than anyone will ever need.

(Think about it. With a range of over 10000 miles, and the earth is only 24000 miles in circumfrence, you can reach almost any point in the world from any other point with one of these birds.)

Now that you mention it, I don't think that the 771 would be much different than the 764, other than one helluva range.

There seem to be several buyers interested in this bird. SIA and ILFC to name two. Maybe others as well.

But the 777-100 program's "fire" has basically been snuffed out with the new 777-200LR launch...

Highly doubtful that it will ever leave the drawing board (or should that be the drawing monitor now...?)

I believe Boeing scrapped the 777-100 concept shortly after the 777-300 entered revenue service. I will try to hunt the Boeing press release archives. And now with the LR versions of the -200 and -300 coming out the need for a small ultra-long range plane seems doubtful.
