I have a theory as to the direction of airlines in the future.
I think we may see a long haul only type of company such as VS, and short haul companies such as jet2. From what information I can piece together on this forum, Most carriers(AA, BA, DL etc.) make vast losses on their domestic routes, but support the company by the profit they make on the international flights. Would it not be a good idea to stop losing money on domestic flights ( for European carriers, I mean European flights) and focus all resourses on the profitable part of your business. LCC's have taken a large part of the domestic market and are crippling the legacy carriers on internal flights.
I am by no means an expert, but this idea has come from fragments of information I have seen on A.net. Just today I have seen a post claiming that DL will cut some of it's domestic flights and concentrate more on international flights now it is in chapter 11. I believe they should have done that ages ago.
