FLL Looking Like A Real Hub For Spirit

Fri Sep 16, 2005 6:47 am

When I flew out FLL right after Katrina to LGB on Jet Blue I noticed the large number of idle Spirit planes sitting on the tarmac at FLL. It was funny timing because as I saw those planes I thought about how Jet Blue when the Embraer planes come into the fleet (supposedly Fort Lauderdale will be launch city for the Embraers) could put Spirit into a world of hurt on routes from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean and domestic points besides the Spirit niche routes like Atlantic City and Detroit.

When I returned from my vacation I learned Spirit is adding lots of new destinations from FLL, and just peeked at the route map and it looks like a real hub. What is everyone's prognosis on the potential success/failure of these new routes, given the intense competition at FLL, and the lack of a new runway at the airport thanks to the NIMBYs in Dania Beach and Fort Lauderdale?

Any thoughts or insights? Does US Airways or Jet Blue or anyone else plan to respond? (I assume Delta is not in fiscal shape to respond)

Indeed, Spirit has a huge operation at FLL. Actually, I went spotting there las week and I saw more Spirit jets landing and taking off than Jetblues and Songs.

I think they are growing strong. Now they have that pretty Airbus fleet that makes them look better. Also the paint scheme.

Probably in the next years, Spirit could become one of the big ones.

This is one of the shots I took of a B6 jet.

I do worry about the ATC constraints there... Especially the opposition to expanding the smaller runway. Remember that FLL is one of the most delayed airports in the country. NK will be setting it as a hub-n-spoke system where there will be a lot of arrivals at once, and a lot of departures at once. Another thing that concerns me is the ability of customs to handle all the caribbean flights when they come back from the islands at almost the same time, but I guess time will tell if it works.

The customs lines at FLL are insane, and the runway delays daunting. Hopefully something will be worked out otherwise Spirit could end up with the worst on-time record in the industry since their network seems so dependent on Fort Lauderdale.

FLL is Spirit's headquarters (Miramar).

Yeah, I know. Actually some months ago, the route CCS - FLL on AA was cancelled due to the low demand and also the delayed flights coming from FLL.

Also, I remember the time when I took that flight that when we arrived into FLL, the international terminal has only one space for immigration, therefore, there was a huge line. Fortunately, the line was the people of my airplane, which was a 737.

I sure hope that they get rwy. 9R expanded, they really need it. In fact, las week, when I went spotting there, I went around the airport and saw that there was no action at all on that rwy. and 9L was full of traffic. I think that the problems FLL is confronting for the expansion of this runway is the neighborhood.

Greetz!

That is exactly what it is... the people who are complaining about the runway expansion are the same people who sit on the plane and b*tch when you have a 30 min. taxi time
