Romanian 707 At SFO Today.

Fri Sep 16, 2005 1:50 pm

As I was landing today I saw a spectacular 707 next to the UA/AA Superbay at SFO. Upon checking the A-NET photo database I found a photograph (see link below,) that matches. Reminds me of the old AF colors.

Anyone else see it, have any idea why it's here or have any history on it?

I saw this fellow at SNN, way back in the mid 70's.

Mr Ceaucescu was a respectable fellow in those days...

Yep - a legacy from when nasty nick and elena where jet setting all over the place.

Not sure what it was doing there now, guess some Romanians must be in town!

Really? You mean that the Ceaucescus were too good to ride around in a Rombac 111?

As a point of information they pretty much got what they deserved in the old fashioned way....things just haven't been the same since the French Revolution.

Slightly off topic, but when I was visiting my grandmother who lives in SBZ (Sibiu/Romania) in August I saw it. Not at the airport (God beware, it would have been waaaaaay too big for SBZ), but when I was just coming back from an internet café where I had checked out a. net(  Smile ) I suddenly heard an aircraft flying. So I looked up and what did I see ? The shiny old B707 flying at low altitude over the city! You can be sure, it got everyone's attention ! And then again another low-altitude bypass, this time even lower ! And what a stunning sound it made ! But I have no clue what it was doing there. Btw, I stay there direct under the approach path so I would see every aircraft arriving at SBZ.

Actually the 707 is a legay of both Ceusescu and President Nixon. Two 707s were bought as part of the deal to have Nixon be the first US president to visit Communist Romania. Registered YR-ABA and YR-ABB there were outfitted for regular mainline flight by Tarom (JFK route comes to mind) but used for state visits as well in a mnner similar to most heads of state use their flag carrier planes. After 1990 they went to Romavia - a quasi military outfit also known as Romafia - who flew them with all sorts of sstuff in them, one cargo shadier than other. A little while later when Romavia decided not to pay for the hush kits they were comandeered by the government and fitted as exclusive VIP transport along with a couple of Rombac 1-11. Needless to say the new Romanian government would be caught dead before catching a commercial flight on Tarom but that is another story. Currently YR-ABA is used for VIP transport (Romania 1) and YR-ABB I think was converted to cargo after it scraped a wing and engine at OTP a few years back. Anyway, beautiful birds, especially in the current color sheme. Crummy government using them, but we will not go there for now.

The 707 is in town because the President of Romania is in town. He was supposed to leave Friday morning. The aircraft came in on Wednesday night, very late or you could say very early Thursday. Registration is YR-ABB. It was a beautiful sight to see. Last time I saw a 707 at SFO was when John Travolta brought his plane in. That was probably 2-3 years ago.

Maybe - shot dead on Christmas Day. By all accounts he was senile for years, suffering delirium because of un-treated diabetes. He also became increasingly dependent upon 'her' as the years wore on becoming more hard-line. A tragedy for the Romanian nation, partly attributable to Washington and London, who failed dissidents and the population alike (that is, until Glasnost and Perestroika). Just take the whole Rombac debacle to show how Britain would pander to such a despot for the sake of exports.
