Same Airline Different Longhaul C-Class Products?

Fri Sep 16, 2005 10:17 pm

While looking for a C-Class flight with China Airlines, I was surprised to find out that this particular airline apparently has three or four different biz class product for their three European routes whoch amount to no more than 13 weekly flights. There is a Premium Business Class in their A340-300 (Serving FRA and VIE) and two or three different types of Biz Class in their Boeing 747 ffleet (serving AMS). One appears to be equivalent to the A340-300 C-Class (flat-bed), one is "the regular" one and there also seems to be an "old one" as well.

So I was wondering what the record number of different biz class products is one single airline offers for longhaul service ?

Doing so, complicates matters enormously. If I travel on CI, for example, on a A340 route and return to Europe on a Boeing 747 route, I have to pay the much more expensive return ticket fare charged for the A340 routes rather than a combination of both. Similarly, an airline with a very small fleet such as China Airlines operates different types of Biz Class on one single route at different days of the week, which must lead to some confusion and frustration by the travelling public.

Is this just a one-off, or are there other examples for so many different Biz-Class products ? I can very well understand that two types are unavoidable during a transitionary period, but the example I have given must have other reasons.
