Nice to see UA bring this route back. I remember when this flight used to operate.

MX used the DC 10-15 with the 10-40 engines on this route to compensate for the hot/high conditions.

Sorry if I am wrong but I don't remember when MX used DC10-10 in the route to DEN, I remember that they flew in 72S and F-100 with stop overs in MZT, PVR, SJD and CJS, after that they started with 320 but with DC10-10 I didn't know it.... I also remember that the DC10-10 was used in flights (night flights) between MEX-GDL-SFO, MEX-PVR-SFO, MEX-GDL-LAX, MEX-GDL-MXL, MEX-HMO, and MEX-LAP-TIJ sometimes they used that aircraft to fly MEX-CUN-MIA and MEX-MTY..... Sorry if my info is wrong..... Cheers

Didn't they use DC-10-10s with JATO rockets attached or were those the 727s

Excellent news. I wonder how Mexicana will react? They are now at 5x weekly flights I believe. When they started the flight, it used to be daily. Of course, they still had the UA code-share back then since they were part of Star Alliance.

Regards

They also got a million bucks from DIA for it.

I remember quite well.  Smile

In order to get the $1 million incentive, they had to operate the route as a daily service for a period of one year without any service interruptions. They did, so they got the incentive and can now do whatever they want.

The irony being that both Frontier and United told DIA they had no interest in providing the service, thus missing out on the million.

Yes, but I don't think it is still on the table - I think it once only deal and Mexicana got it.

At one stage, DIA were offering a million to the first airline that would start service to any foreign "major" city, but they had a very clearly defined concept of "major".

I think Frontier only got about $50,000 for starting CUN, and less for the other Mexican resorts.

Then again, if someone, anyone, wanted to start DEN/NRT, or any Asian city, I think DIA would give them the moon and the stars.

cheers

Frontier turned down the DIA offer of a million, and they have not applied to the DOT for the route.

If they were interested in it, I'd guess that the United decision has killed it, at least for now.

United will be adding a lot of seats to a route that isn't filling planes on a daily basis.

cheers

Why did they leave the alliance? What prompted them to leave I should say.

Good question. I've heard a few different versions of the story, but whatever the reason, I wish they would have stayed. Rumors about them joining Oneworld have been ciculating for about 2 years, but nothing yet. Personally, I wish they went back to the Star Alliance.

MX's main Star Alliance partner was naturally UA, and MX was giving more than it was receiving. MX realized that it could have more benefits if it left the alliance and therefore it decided to not renew the UA codeshare agreement when it expired, thus having less codeshare flights with other Star carriers than the minimum required to be a member, and that is what got MX kicked out of the alliance. MX devised this strategy with lots of wit so as not to pay the penalties it would have incurred if it had voluntarily left.

MX is now better off as an independent player. It maintains codeshare agreements with AA, IB, AM (in few routes now, like AM's MEX-GRU and MX's MEX-SAL), VW, AV, CM, AC, RG, NZ, LA, LH, JL, QF, CX and one or two more I am forgetting. I believe that oneworld really wants to get MX but so far it seems that MX will continue as a solo player. I don't see MX going back to Star at all.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Despite all this new flight still I see UA as a weak player compared to the rest of the US majors like AA, DL and CO with flights to MEX...

Will be interesting to see how MX will respond to this.

isn't that the reason UA and the Star would want MX? Ua is weak in Mexico, but MX is weak everywhere else in the world, that isnt a slam on MX, they arent as big as UA in Asia,Canada,Europe, and so. Doesn't it make sense to keep an alliance or be a member of one and make some money off them?

MX is happier with AA and IB as its main international partners. I am completely sure Star wants MX back but MX just does not want Star at all.

I don't think MX will care since this route blew when they codeshared with UA, and it blows now that they are flying it alone. This will be a tough market for UA to make work--they'll probably do slightly better than MX but that's not saying much.
