MSY Air Service Increasing Every Day

Sun Sep 18, 2005 3:36 am

We put out a press release this morning detailing the growth of air service at MSY since service resumed after Hurricane Katrina. The press release reads as follows:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- September 17, 2005; 11:00 a.m. --- Air Carriers at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport are increasing the level of service next week.

Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines each resumed service to Armstrong International on Tuesday, September 13 with 2 daily round trip flights. By Saturday, September17, both Northwest and Delta increased their level of service. The current schedule of service to New Orleans as of Saturday, September 17 includes:

Northwest resumed Tuesday, September 13
2 round trips to Memphis
2 round trips to Detroit
1 round trip to Minneapolis / St. Paul

Delta resumed Tuesday, September 13
3 round trips to Atlanta
1 round trip to Cincinnati

Beginning next week, three (3) other air carriers will join Northwest and Delta in offering scheduled service to Armstrong International. Continental, Southwest and American Airlines will each return to New Orleans in the coming week, increasing the number of daily round trip flights to 18.

Continental resumes Monday, September 19
4 daily to Houston (IAH)

Southwest resumes Tuesday, September 20
2 daily to Houston Hobby (HOU)

American resumes Wednesday, September 21
3 daily to Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW)

Delta increases service Monday, September 19
4 round trips to Atlanta
1 round trip to Cincinnati

Air Cargo Carriers, UPS and FedEx both resumed regularly scheduled cargo service from Armstrong International last week and DHL will resume service next week.

Airport officials expect the level of air service to increase as demand for travel to the New Orleans region increases.

NW really stepped up to the plate as the first airline back in, and will shortly be at roughly half of their pre-Katrina flight levels.

From what I can tell, most flights have gone out with excellent flight loads. No doubt, as businesses and residents are allowed back into the metropolitan area (Jefferson Parish, which includes MSY, is allowed completely back this weekend; the city of New Orleans begins reentry on Monday), and the area goes full steam into the recovery mode, more airlines will return, and many additional flights added.

Tom thanks for the update.
Too many people see the negative side of things going on down in N.O.
There has been a lot of effort on you and your fellow New Orleans area residents to work to get things back to near normal as possible with few resources.
