DAB Wooing UA ...

Sun Sep 18, 2005 4:36 am

Looks like Daytona wants UA service from IAD. I'm assuming Ted service ?

I wish DAB luck with that one. UA makes no bones about the fact that they are primarily interested in business pax, not leisure destinations like DAB. However, I think they could fill a CRJ back and forth to IAD.

Why is it that on the Atlantic cost of Florida MIA, FLL, PBI and JAX are served by a large number of legacy carriers (and LCCs) while the two commercial airports served by network carriers on the long stretch between Palm Beach and Jacksonville (MLB, DAB) have only one legacy carrier (DL in MLB, CO in DAB) operating from there once the DL cuts are implemented ?

Considering the saturation and competitiveness of the FL market this seems rather surprising at first sight.  Confused

Delta also serves DAB, and is has the most flights out of here. Continental currently only has one daily flight on an ERJ to Newark. Delta has at least 6 daily flights to Atlanta, and CVG gets one daily CR7 (which will end on Dec. 1).

Back when i worked for DAB the airport was close with US-CLT and NW-DTW while I was here. US was really interested, but this was about 18 mos ago when things werent looking good for them. US-CLT would be a hit from day one in my oppinion.

For some airlines DAB is looking better and better as days go on, esp if they can fill a plane with the people paying thr slight premium (not that much anymore) rather than flying to MCO.

Both US and NW i think would do better than UA-IAD, but any of them would work. the DAB market has over 75% leakage to MCO and JAX. Meaning that DAB with 750,000 annual pax could theoretically be the size of 2.5-3 million pax, now thats pushing it, but there is definately room for 3x US-CLT 2x NW DTW and 2x UA-IAD all on some form of 50-70 seat RJs.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

I would assume Express.

As long as CO has service, they should be encouraged to add flights to IAH and provide more service westward.

DAB only has a fair ammount of traffic due to:
1) The NASCAR Track
2) Embry-Riddle

I would doubt any more expansions at DAB than waht CO and DL already have.

That's the case with any Florida airport that has mainline service. DL is the primary carrier of human remains in the region because it is a flat rate.
A funeral home in Volusia County isn't going to send the body to MCO when the rate is the same at DAB. Same can be said for MLB, PBI, PNS, VPS, TLH, SRQ, RSW, etc.

DAB's top markets are primarily all the mid to large sized cities in the northeast (BOS, PVD, BDL, ALB, BUF, NYC, PHL, PIT, WAS, BWI) etc..

Based on that knowledge..look at the service differences to all of these cities from CLT IAD and DTW......IAD typically has the lowest amount of seats with typically RJs to these markets except for the large ones, whereas these destinations typically have mainline form US-CLT and NW-DTW, even down to the ALB/SYR/MHT levels.

DAB is reliant on the connecting hub model, therfore the more connecting seats the better the chance of success.

UA used to have service between IAD and DAB through Presidential with BAe-146's three or four times per day during late 1980's and early 1990's.

Don't forget that FCA flies to MLB and FLL.

As their traffic accounts for less than a hundreth of a percent it is easy to forget them. So much that they have a 0.0 market share.

RL757PVD,
its your opinion and i will accept that but ual would be a better fit for anyone going to the northeast from as far west as cle east....if the you had nwa,us and ua offering the same price from dab to lets say bos and the they left about the same time chances are the nwa flight would arrive later..via dtw...i would rather fly thru clt or iad or even atl for that matter if the price was the same and the arrival time was sooner..or if allegiant flew non stop to my city from sfb they would be my airline of choice...............my opinion

This is great news! I hope this will come to pass. I will be going to Riddle in Fall 2006 and an ID 90 on DL is about $330 from SFO-DAB. For about $70.00 more, I can get a ticket on the net, confirmed, no stand-by and collect the miles. I have long thought that IAD via UA Express would be a great connection for DAB travelers going northward (or westward). ExpressJet to EWR is quite limited with just one daily flight (and tickets from the westcoast are often in the $600 range on CO to DAB). United's entry into the market would save me considerable expense provided I could get there using a pass.

Presidential actually flew 737-200's into both DAB and MLB and flights went pretty full for the most part. They became UA Express towards the end and operated the 146 from IAD to DAB.

I think there is a big market for DAB service to the northeast, at least in the winter time, as long as the prices are similar to those at MCO or SFB.

It's amazing when you think about the evolution of DAB since the late 1980's/early 1990's. When DAB was running their old terminal, there were many airlines and departures out of DAB: Piedmont/USAir, Delta, Eastern, Continental, Pan Am Express, American, Presidential...and probably some others that I had forgotten. Even LTU served DAB for a little while with 767-300's and L15's. Now, with the new terminal, there's hardly any air service in comparison.

As service into JAX and especially MCO expanded, Daytona Beach and Melbourne got left behind......the problem is that these airports are sandwiched inbetween two major airports that offer service to many destinations - also there are many low fare options at MCO that many pax find too good to pass up.

That being said, there is a building boom in Florida and both the Daytona and Melbourne areas are seeing increased population and an influx of Snowbirds with second homes in Florida. More service to both airports could be supported, but at reasonable fares competitive to those offered at nearby MCO. If an airline would offer flights to DAB or MEL with a fare structure similiar to that offered in the MCO or FLL markets, I dont think it would be a problem filling several 737/A32X flights per day into DAB or MEL from NYC, PHL, BOS, WAS or eastern hubs. Most leisure pax will not pay a large premium to fly into DAB when cheap fares are available to MCO and they plan on renting a car anyway.
