US Airways: Welcome Back Pretzels

Sun Sep 18, 2005 5:15 am

In a very short-live cost cutting move, US will once again offer free bags of pretzels in coach. I had a feeling this would happen once the merger went through.

Now the question is, are they going to swap out snacks every once and awhile like HP does?

What great news!!! I have not yet been able to find out what makes pretzels so attractive to US airlines...Is it that the passenger urgenttly needs or asks for this nutrition rich product and there is no better way to help him/her bridge or survive a three to four hour flight? Please enlighten me!

Swisswings you might disagree with their choice of snack (if you can call pretzels that), but at least they are working on improving their customer service which IMHO is a step in the right direction.

May I kindly remind you of the positive media coverage that our flag carrier LX got when they reinstated free snacks/meals on European short haul routes. If memory serves me right it was the main item on the Swiss national evening news and has helped to improve the battered quality image of the carrier comsiderably.

I commend US for taking a first small step in the right direction.

Great news, indeed. Free pretzels is more than enough to make me forget about the dozens of missed connections, cancelled flights and lost bags, tools and equipment.  rotfl

F4N - Pretzels may really help forget, at least for the three minutes you need to empty those large pretzel bags...

HAJFLYER - Swiss reintroduced food in Economy on European routes but in fact, it is nothing to write home about but certainly better than pretzels. Excellent product placement for Nestle...

This raises my question: are bag of pretzels cheaper than bag of peanuts?

Generally speaking, I prefer peanuts over pretzels.

On side note, Southwest is famous for peanuts, am I correct? Peanuts are more popular than pretzels, in my opinion...

This is funny ... Seagulls like peanuts, I guess.

Nothing wrong with placing Swiss food on Swiss planes. Classic win-win situation.

At least it is not worse that the fare that competing LCCs such as AB offer.

Pretzels cost about 2.5 cents a unit. Peanuts can cost 7 cents and up (plus you have those allergies to worry about)

Either one is a pain to clean up when passengers grind them into the carpet.

yeah those spinzels were good.....

pretzels make a lot more sense than peanuts...ask your friends, and you'd be amazed that you probably know half a dozen people allergic to peanuts- its actually very common. A co-worker of mine gets so irritated around peanuts that he cannot fly Southwest.

Incidentally, I received two packets of peanuts on a recent BDL-CLE flight on COntinental Express....honey roasted too (my favorite).

Pretzels are cheaper to stock and you don't have the allergy problem to deal with. I personally like peanuts better but variety is the spice of life. HP - sorry, US now - has dry and honey roasted peanuts AND pretzels Big grin

I can understand them using pretzels over peanuts but I personally prefer peanuts as well over pretzels. Pretzels in my opinion are so nasty, but I guess I can just bring on my own snacks for a short flight.

sigh...I remember when I was a little kid and flying AA, USAir, and Piedmont and always getting extra peanuts because the female FA's thought I was so cute.

Let's also not forget that US has hands-down the best cornucopia of snacks in domestic First of any carrier. At least when arranged and displayed by a caring flight attendant, there must be at least ten different items, including some pretty-sophisticated sweet snacks. Having flown a lot of DL and FL flights in first in the last few years, I have to say that I was beyond-pleasantly-surprised on my last few trips in domestic First on US (particularly on the A321, which I love). Amenities aren't typically the reason that a business traveler flies an airline, but I have to say that, properly presented, they can go a long way to making one feel appreciated and inclining one to give a little loyalty to a carrier.

As to all the bitching about missed connections and lost bags -- who checks bags these days anyway? -- I have to say that my experiences out of LGA and through CLT and BOS in the past few months on US have been nothing but stellar. I wouldn't think of flying anyone else to Bermuda in-season from the NY area, which I've done twice this year. The comfort and convenience of leaving from and arriving at LGA is incredible. Sure beats slugging my way out to the the horrible AA terminal at JFK or negotiating the mammoth Continental operation at EWR. It doesn't even feel like you're on an international flight, and --zip!-- you're on the beach in what is clearly another country. Too bad they can't sustain the LGA-BDA operation all year round.

Best,

Bill

As a poor ramper, I've done that many times! It's best when a plane has more than one kind of snack on board...it's a veritable gold mine.

Then I grab a couple of drinks out of the beverage cart and I'm set.

Amen. I've been meaning to go order a tub off the website.

BTW, do any other airlines serve Spinzels? On the website, it says it's "the world famous airline pretzel."

Amen. This past May, I splurged and blew some cash on a First Class ticket to MCO so I could visit ERAU with my father, and about a month after we got back we dumped CO and went back to US, who we dumped in favor of CO awhile back. I think it was the upgrades that drew me back (or the lack of upgrades with CO).

I'd rather they worry less about pretzels and more about baggage. Just got back from a IAD-PHL-BGR round trip on US Airways Express. Bags were misdirected in PHL on the way up to BGR - got them 24 hours after arrival, and apparently they never made it out of BGR today on our return trip. They currently have no idea where they are - typical of US customer service.

And before the rash of "this happens the time, don't be harsh" posts appear, save your breath. I know baggage is occasionally misdirected. I've experienced it many times on several other airlines, but in every case, I've been advised within 6 hours where the baggage is, and when I can expect delivery. Apparently US can't manage this simple task.

It will be a cold day in hell before I fly US again.

Who checks bags? Those of us flying to destinations where the only service is on RJ's, where carrying on luggage for any trip longer than 3 days is near impossible.

In the past 10 years, I've flown AS, WN, UA, AA, AF, CO, Quantas, Malaysia, Austrian, LH, Air Malta, TACA, NW, DL, Avianca, and US. Only US has managed to lose my bags on both inbound and outbound legs, and only US can't seem to provide even the most basic level of customer service like telling me where my bags are - at this point, 12 hours since I checked in at BGR.

I guess in the massive crush of 3 inbound and 3 outbound flights a day, my bags were overlooked.

Don't they let you do that sort-of-a-gate-check thing when you actually GET to the RJ, rather than checking in at the curb on the far side of PHL? Whatever; I just spent a month in ATL with a not-huge carryon -- of course I avoid those wheely things which wouldn't fit in an RJ overhead. Each to his own, I guess. So I guess next time you'll fly someone else and we won't hear you complain about them losing your bags. 'Course, I'm pretty sure I have seen someone swear that ONLY CO loses their bags, and another that ONLY UA loses their bags, and another that ONLY DL can't tell them where their bag is today.
