First A380 In Etihad Colours Flying ;)

Sun Sep 18, 2005 9:23 pm

Don't flame me for the title, but I have never seen an airliner model that ist THAT impressive. I have not been there and only seen the pictures, but this A380 powered with 4 real Jet engines is absolutely stunning:

http://www.jetpower-messe.de/html/aktuell.html

I have seen more pictures which have been published by a visitor, but I do not know him, therefore I do not want to link directly to his side... You can find the pictures under www.bugnet.de, Forum, "Flugtag in Neuenahr, Bilder vom A 380"

Absolutely great...

EDIT: I just saw it might be in the wrong forum, Sorry

Just a daydream but if the A380 was in Etihad colours AND was the one sent to the DXB airshow, would love to see the faces of the Emirates PR guys when it landed.

The wheels even retract! Amazing. I wonder what it cost to build that. I suppose nowadays it wouldn't be so difficult to build something like a BD-10.

I don't know much about radio controlled planes, but do those big planes have little cameras in the nose so the operator can fly first person while watching a monitor, because I'd imagine it'd be damn hard to land that 380 just by watching from the side... I saw a video of a big recreation of an Avro Lancaster (I think) crashing just after take off, gotta feel for someone that probably put months into a model and has to watch it crash!

As an ex-rc flyer, I can tell you this one would be about 8500€, with a very big portion of luck 6000. Not to forget the 1000s of hours of work...
The turbines are very expensive, depending on the size. Those are, btw, turbojets, no turbofans available at the moment...sure this will change over the next few years. So the sound will be a bit different from the original.

What engines are these? They are turbojets, but which fuel are they using, how loud are they, how much thrust do they produce?

In some paper I read about a LH 747 that is around five meters long. It even has a REAL registration, because of its size.

This A380 also had to do a checkride which it passed. I don't know whether they put 860 small people in it, though  Wink

I just found some data on jet engines for model planes... max thrust 5,2 kg, weight 500g, Fuel consumption 160g/min.

There are also stronger models available. A pretty impressive thrust/weight ratio... I guess a model A340 has no problems with its climb rate  Wink

Last Tuesday, Fraport had it out on the ramp in FRA. I guess it was mainly for PR pictures, etc., since they just started cutting the trees for the new A380 maintenance hangar. They let it taxi from E9 to E4. Not on the real taxiway though. It rolled on the "street" for aircraft cars in front of the taxiway, accompanied by about 5 follow me and security cars. Caused a lot of attention on the ramp. Keep your eyes open for some of those PR pictures...

Cheers,

There was a B-52 with a 12M wingspan and 8 working turbine engines built in ENgland but it chashed. There is an amazing video of it on Flightlevel350.com

Of course, you can use kerosene, but also diesel, petroleum, heating oil, and if you want a lot of smoke, Biodiesel !
When you hear them they don´t appear to be very loud, but just like in the real world, there are noise limits too. There has been a discussion started by DMFV (Deutscher Modellflieger Verband) members and airfield neighbors. The rc-flyers wanted a higher noise limit for jets as they have a less annoying sound than a 2-stroke engine, the neighbors, of course, refused.

Oh, if you guys know of more impressive RC videos, PLEASE give the urls!! The F-14 was awesome! I am still downloading the B-52 video.

What is the average cost of a nice RC plane? In USD?

Also, how long does it tend to take to build something like the F-14 or the B-52 or even the A380. I imagine that the F-14 and B-52 might be a bit more difficult to build, depending on the functions built into the. Like, sweep-able wings, bombay doors, flaps and gear... etc.

Thanks! I have always wanted to get into RC planes. Now, if only someone really wanted to spend some time, make a scale airport with everything functioning!  Smile Tugs that push back, taxi ways and all! Have all different types of planes, helicopters... Just imagine the Spotting you could do there!!!  Wow!

The F-14 is great, but I guess that these airplanes are really difficult to handle and also dangerous, they seem to get so fast that you obviously need a lot of skill to control them... Too bad the B52 has crashed, that surely was a very expensive loss...

Hi,

some morre pics of the A380 model:
http://www.michel-concorde.de/airbus/a380/index.html

it´s the webpage of peter michel (the guy who built the model)
it also shows his other planes e.g. his famous LH B744.
He sold the 747 to finance the A380.

sorry, it´s in german, but "picture's still say more than 1000 words"

He even needs a license to fly this airplane, with the funny short German name.

"Ausweis fr Steuerer von Flugmodellen und von sonstigem fr die Benutzung des Luftraums bestimmten Luftfahrtgert"

It weighs 60kgs and has 11litres Kerosene inside (The 747). The article states that only airplanes up to 25kgs are considered modelplanes, everything else needs a special clearance.

Hut ab!

A couple of things worth clearing up for you R/C novices!  Wink

You don't need, or want a camera system in the nose for flying. The whole joy of flying RC is being able to control the aircraft from the ground, demonstrating your skills as an RC pilot in being able to judge aircraft position, speed, direction etc to fly the aircraft in whichever manner you choose, be it scale or tear-arsing around the sky.

The only time you would want the camera system is if the aircraft goes beyond visual range... but then your now a UAV operator and it's a job and not a hobby.

The crash of the B-52 was indeed a shame... the first time out. Unfortunately against all advice the builder elected to sink another fortune into building another and it too crashed... on its maiden flight I believe. Such a shame as the aircraft was an absolute stunner! Saw it fly at Woodvale last year... great performance.

Hope that helps!
