A UAE 747 At BWI Today?

Mon Sep 19, 2005 11:46 am

A United Arab Emirates Boeing 747 (A6-YAS) was spotted landing at BWI (Baltimore Washington International) Sunday, September 18th.

I cannot figure out why this huge beast would be landing here. Has anyone heard of any diversions?

Thanks!

2005 UN World Summit in New York

Apparently parking was full @ JFK and some planes went elsewhere to park.

Wow...Do they take a bus to NY from Baltimore or park and wait for clearance to land at JFK?

I think they would probably land at JFK, drop off their VIP, then fly to BWI, Dover, Dulles, wherever to park.

Kinda nice to have you're own private limo plane!

It was the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi attending UN summit.

Chris,

SWF was pretty loaded with traffic on Saturday from what the tower told me. The Togolaise Gov't 707 as well as another 707 were both seen up there and the log that a friend passed along to me for Friday was quite impressive with 747, MD-11 and IL-76s!

Actually they're here for a family member to go to Johns Hopkins.

BWI did all they could to prevent parking for the UN event.

It's quite common for foreign leaders/royalty to use US hospitals. When I handled VIP jets at ADW King Hussein used to fly in on his L-1011 for a "state visit". Then he'd sneak out of Dulles going to the Mayo Clinic on a private jet, leaving the L-1011 parked at ADW. He was in the U.S. quite often before he died.

BWI receive numerous heavy biz jets each year with patients for Hopkins or the Hopkins Wilmer Eye Clinic. Most of the aircraft are coming in from the Middle East. During the past two years or so, I can recall Saudi MD-11s, L1011s and 757 and UAE 747-400, 747SP and BBJ, among others. Garuda's first appearance at BWI several years ago was to bring the then-President here for eye surgery at the Wilmer Eye Clinic.

Seeing BWI is about 20 minutes from Hopkins, and Johns Hopkins is ranked as the number one hospital in the World.

In the mid 1980's a husband and wife flew in from Tehran. The wife needed an operation. When asked how they were going to pay for it, the husband had a briefcase packed with hundred dollar bills.

Great story.

I didn't initially consider the hospitals and the type of world-wide clientele they would bring to the area. I assumed IAD would land the big-boys, but then again, the beltway traffic is so bad from Dulles to Baltimore that BWI benefits!
