The commuter wing of EI was dropped when EI became a 'LCC'. At the time the airline wanted to drop all non core activities and concentrate on mainline routes. This included using a single type on all short haul routes (A32X).
Several of the comuter routes were Irish PSO's (Public Service Obligation) which were given subsidies by the govt but the airline did not consider them worth keeping, so they were awarded to Aer Arann. Also, several of these regional Irish airports cannot accomidate an A320. Increased compitition from FR was also one of the main reasons that most UK routes which had been served by the EI commuter fleet (146s/F50s) were dropped.

Didn't it merge into Aer Lingus when the went 'Low-Cost'?

Maybe before that, but i am sure they merged.

Thanks

Aer Lingus and Aer Lingus commuter were never different airlines, so it was'nt a merging per se. The commuter routes were just discontinued, and the commuter fleet was disposed of around 2002.

But the commuter routes were flown by Aer Lingus a/c after EI Commuter, weren't they?

Thanks

Richard William Creagh set up Aer Lingus commuter he is now with Ukraine International Airlines and left commuter because he felt Aer Lingus' future was uncertain and he left soon before commuter disappeared.

I guess it depends which ones. After the restructuring, all of EI's internal Irish routes (except DUB - SNN) were dropped, along with most of the thinner UK - Ireland routes, but some of the commuter branded aircraft, such as the 146s had always been used on some of the mainline flights to the continent also. Eg the 146s served DUB - LCY which was dropped, as was DUB/ORK - Rennes with the fokker 50, but the 146s were also used on routes like DUB - AMS, or DUB - CDG etc which remain.

Yer, that's what I meant but EI still fly DUB-SNN which was a Commuter route I think.

Thanks

EI do still operate DUB-SNN but only because the SNN stopover rule forces them to. Its not a proper route of its own. I remember my first ever flight was from DUB to SNN on one of the old EI 741s. On the return leg there was a BAC-111 used!

Can you book normal flights on EI from DUB/SNN the only reason I can think of going on that flight because I wanted to go on a A330 for 25 minutes.

Yes you can, eur 30 each way + tax. It comes to eur 100 for a rtn trip. The A330s fly it at about 19000ft!
