I Can't Believe I Never Knew This....

Tue Sep 20, 2005 1:56 am

I've been a YS-11 fan for years, and thought I knew who most of the operators of the type in the US were. I knew PBA had them, but I never knew they took on pseudo-Continental colors at one time:

Kinda blew me away...does anyone know how many airframes were painted in this manner?

If Continental had those things, then I wonder if any of them ever made their way down to Houston. I frequented IAH when I lived there, and have never seen a real YS-11.

Remember how loud those things were? I used to watch them in ACK, pulling up next to the much quieter DC-3's.

Remember that PE bought PBA and when CO took them over, they got their associated airlines as well.

Oh yes! When I worked in my airline's cargo facility, it was right next door to where ABEX used to park their YS-11, and when he fired it up those Darts at night, it was ear-splitting! I loved it though. It's still one of my very favorite planes for flight-simming too...I love cranking up the volume when I fly this one.  Smile

Here's some real YS-11's I've had the good fortune to meet:

The cheatlines on that YS-11 are that of PBA Provincetown/Boston Airways that along with Britt Airways was integrated into the PeoplExpress fold in 1986. Then in early 1987 PE was integrated into the Texas Air (Continental/Eastern) fold....So,
of the PASSENER CARRYING airlines that flew YS-11s in the US...they were:
Piedmont Airlines of NC
Pinehurst Airlines of SC
Mid Pacific of Hawaii
Far West Airlines of Fresno, ca.
PBA of Provincetown, Ms. and Naples Fl.
Ft. Worth Airlines of Ft. Worth, Tx.
Trans Central Airlines, Oklahoma City
Simmons Airlines of Negaunee, Mi.

Anywhere you can find a sound file of one of those? By the way, anywhere you can find a sound file of the VC-10? Miss seeing the YS-11 at O'Hare.

Hmm, you can get the YS-11 sound package here:

http://www.alliedfsgroup.com/?RhZbkY...nAlN5waqbekXqChpg2y2UpmyoUnCgkayvx

I don't know how you can get it to work outside of the simulator though.

Also, VC-10 sounds are available here:

http://www.dmflightsim.co.uk/vickers_vc10.htm#SOUND

These were sampled from a video and are also for flightsim, although they are individual .wav files, as are the YS-11 sounds, so you may be able to play them somehow.

Thanks AccessAir, for that! I think I knew most of that list already. I noticed you left out Hawaiian Airlines...they operated at least three examples in the late 60's, N1145H, N1146H, and N1147H. I believe they all went to Mid Pacific after that.

They were operated by PBA a regional affiliate of PeoplExpress and later CO, they flew out of BOS, LGA, EWR and Florida.

PBA did not operate out of IAH or Denver.

Rampkontroler,

Many thanks!
I will hopefully be adding a few more sounds to the site shortly.
If you send me some feedback I will add you to my update list and send you the update when I complete it.
I have another couple engine start-ups like that one of which I am about 50 feet away from the plane...
Once again thanks for looking!!

This brings to mind the PBA DC-3s in the Eastern Express colors. There was one in full colors with titles sitting in Fremont Ohio a couple of years ago. Don't know if it's still there or not.

Cool shots!!!!!

N268MA is the very first Mesaba Fokker F.27-200 I ever flew on, from Moline to Minneapolis back in August of 1989 for an interview with Mesaba.
That aircraft ended up being sold to Scenic/Eagle Canyon used as a spares ship...
N4560Z a 500 series Fokker was the first one in Mesaba's fleet to wear the Red colours like that. It previosuly flew for Mississippi Valley Airlines and previous to that East-West in Australia if memory serves correctly. After its tenure with Mesaba it went on to fly with short lived Mahalo Air in Hawaii....I am not sure where it is now or if it is even airworthy. last I heard it was still sitting in HNL.. I think still wearing its tail number of N980MA. Some one please correct me if I am wrong.
I miss seeing Fokker and Fairchild F.27/F-27/FH-227s.....I grew up seeing the type all my life. So its sad not to be able to go to any airport and see them....

Yes, it is a real shame...I think the last one I saw was a FedEx feeder down in Miami a couple years ago. Not sure if they still have them. Loved the striped props!

The best you could hope for is an F-50....but it's just not the same is it!

Nope, never got the job at XJ....However I landed a job at a Travel Agency back then to which I am still working for.
I was actually invited by Mesaba back in 1995 to ride gratis on their last two scheduled Fokker F.27 flights on 14 and 15 Sep 95. The plane operated with a 200 series N278MA. It was a shame esp the (overnight in CWA) next morning, as there were only 5 passengers and about 35 open seats.
I did get to actually see Some of the YS-11s at OHare with Simmons Airlines back in 1986....To me tho, all I kept saying to myself was, "That YS-11 is making F-27 sound!!!" The only other RR Dart powred plane I have actually seen in service is a G-159 Gulfstream. Even then it was weird hearing the Dart sound coming from the Gulfstream...
I just wish that I had been able to get on one of the Simmons YS-11s before they were replaced by the ATRs.
The Rolls Royce Dart is my Favourite turboprop engine and actually, they sound different on different planes such as the YS-11, or G-159 or F27s or I saw on a video a HS-748...But yeah awesome engine.
We cannot also forget the Armstrong Whitworth Argosy, and the HS-Andover were also powered by the Dart. BEA (British European Airways) even temporarily re-engined a DC3 with some Darts. Joe Fugure, the former head of Pilgrim Airlines out of Groton, Ct. also made a Super DC3 Dart conversion using two Darts from an old Capital/United 745 Viscount. There was also the Yellow and Brown Conroy conversion of the DC3 with Darts...
Ok...stop me now...LOL.

I have had the opportunity to work near some of the Convair 600 series as well. It was the same wonderful sound!

I did see one recently here in Cleveland, N73137 stopped by on Sep. 1st looking pretty much the same as here, only without the titles:

I remember seeing the corpulent Curtis C46 and DC 3 with Allegheny colors. I was like 8 years old and my cousin was 6. Both of us were and still aviation enthusiasts. We joked how Allegheny was so Old timey and unglamorous as compared to Eastern, Delta, National, UA and TWA!

I remember watching a movie a long time ago where a scene was filmed at ROA, with the PA annoucement heard in the background announcing the imminent departure of Piedmont flight so-and-so for Baltimore. Out the window could be seen a YS-11.
