HELP!...I Need A New Livery ...BAD!

Thu May 11, 2000 1:26 am

Hey Southwest!.....Red Bellies and Puke Tan went away with disco, and trying to cover it up with a whale isn't much better. American also needs a "facelift". The retro-silver look has passed you by. Lets show a little color and character. I am also very dissapointed with Delta's new try at a livery. The old new livery was an improvement on the 80's look but this 2000 look has to go. Any other liveries that need help?

SWA's paint scheme is very much part of the airlines charm. It certainly stands out in a herd at the terminal. And painting aircraft cost alot of lira! and as I understand it AA claims that their polished bare metal saves them money. That from Emperor-dowager Crandle himself.

I think airliners.net needs a new color scheme. So does TAP Air Portugal, AA. The 2000 Delta schemes stinks! I would also like to see only 1 Aeroflot scheme and air france needs to either get a new scheme or start washing their planes.

Go out to ORD and watch a UAL and US jet taxi toward you. Quick now, name the airline. You've got a 50/50 chance of being right. Now motor on over to MDW and let a WN jet taxi towards you. You'll know who it is long before it makes it to the ramp area.

Even better, watch some planes that are on approach or takeoff from a spot about 50 miles from the airport. Look up. I'd bet money that you'll easily recognize the WN jet. But it could be difficult identifying the others without binoculars or a telescope.

The color may be ugly, but I haven't been able to see the fuselage color from the interior of the aircraft yet.

No way! American and Southwest have two very good liveries! American's is clean, patriotic, and beautiful. When clean, it shines and is amazing. Their livery has to stay. The longer they keep it, the better.
Southwest is also good. It's tan, so what? It looks deserty, VERY southwest indeed! (Not that the airline is worth it, but...)
United REALLY needs to loose the gloomy dark blue and grey.
Air Canada/Canadian, Delta, TAP Air Portugal, Lufthansa, Finnair, Aeroflot, Canada 3000, Monarch, British Airways, and BWIA all need new liveries.

What's wrong with Air Canada's livery? It's not even 10 years old!!!!!!!!

Also, although Canada 3000 needs a new livery, I think they are smart saving money and not wasting on re-painting planes. I mean when it comes to bottom line, especially for a budget carrier like Canada 3000, what's more important, what the plane looks like or the price of the ticket?

RE: Delta And SW, You're Ugly!

Thu May 11, 2000 6:28 am

I cannot imagine why in the world Delta changed their livery. They had a classy paint scheme that reminded one of Delta's long heritage of being at the forefront of the airlines. All their new liveries are ugly! (although I do like the tail of that 777 on the newest one). I also think that Southwest's planes are ugly. The colors remind me of the interior of a 1976 Piper Archer II I flew in recently. Burnt orange and tan DON'T go well together. However, American's is elegant and shouldn't be changed for another couple of decades.

I don't think that AC shoudl change their colours now (although maybe after AC and CP are completely merged they could look at an improvement.) But back when they indroduced their latest colours I would have liked to see the entire airplane in the two tone green with the red stripe in between, like the AC check in counter signs are. It is hard to pucture when all there is to esplain it is text but I think that if they had gone with that it would have looked really really kool, No other airline had an all Green airplane, until CITYBIRD changed their colours.

Also I think that LOT needs a new paint scheme, they have had the same colours since the communist days and the Soviet airplanes.....

Ok, Canada3000 needs a new name and livery. jmc's livery is fine, it's the name that has to go. As for American, a little change wouldn't hurt, but they need to keep the silver look. Delta's new look is absolute trash, and BWIA's needs improvement. Southwest is just fine, but UA deffinately needs help. As for Aeroflot, their new one is great, if they could only get it on everything. I can't stand TACA's new livery, and Air Canada is just to bland. They need cheatlines, or something such as to spice things up. Lufthansa also needs to be spiced up. Just like their Star Partner Air Canada, they are too bland. BA needs to keep the diversity, Garuda needs to spice things up also. And, finally, Finnair, Air France, and ElAl also need some more color.
On the positive side, kudos to Lan Chile for their new one, and also to America West, TWA, KLM, and Sabena who all have great logos. (So Cathay, Air New Zealand, Royal Jordanian, Emirates, Saudi Arabian, and Avianca.)
Happy Flying!

Liveries

Thu May 11, 2000 7:01 am

You guys all have bad taste. AA's livery is very classy, very professional, and most importantly very well identified. Some smart up there was smart to point out that SWA's is outdated, but thats what makes SWA...SWA. They use that quirky, off-centered style to identify themselves, and it clearly works. I'm not a big fan of plain white fuselages (Air Canada/Delta2000/South African/EgyptAir). It used to look simple and minimalistic, but now it just lacks any personality at all. I'll vote for my favorite livery, the old orange and blue colors of South African Airlines with the springbok on the tail. Now that was a classy, professional look with a lot of character. UAL and US Airways have dark rich colors because they seek business travelers who usually like that dark, staid style. Lufthansa?? The German flag carrier has a very likeable look. Air France also is well accepted. One that does need an update is Aerolineas, but considering that airlines potential insolvensy, repainting planes is the last thing they need to do. SunCountry could also update, but they're in the same boat as the Argentinians (money needed for more important things)

My fav pick: SAA

I have to totally disagree, I love the Southwest colors. It has character and sticks out in a crowd. I also like AA's colors. The bare metal look will never go out of style. As for United I like the dark grey color scheme. It looks very professional and dignified. Much better than the old scheme. I also like Continental's and TWA's new liveries. Alaska could use a new livery, as long as the keep the smiling eskimo though.

Whats wrong with Sun Country?? I like the billboard slanted "Sun Country" on the fuselage, its nice. I also have to disagree about United, they have a great livery as does US Airways. AA's is good as long as clean and Delta's 1997 "old new" livery is great also. They should keep that, or if they are going to keep their 2000 livery, then put the block print white "delta" on the tail, like with the 1997 livery. I think TWA has the best livery in the biz, especially on their md-80's and 717's, looks great.

I think it is about time SIA looked at something new. Yeah, I know it is very recognisable, but there is something about the combination of gold, bronze, orange and black that does nothing for me. Also, when the aircraft get a bit grubby (when the white is not so white) they look terrible.

Hi,

I should say that I'm very disapointed of what they have done with Delta's image. It's so boring. The previous livery was not outstanding, but it was a symbol of continuity.

By the way, for those who want to change AA's livery: would you eliminate the McDonald's "M"? For lots of people around the world, especially American people, change AA's image would be a "Crime against the inheritance". You just can't do that. It's a symbol too. We see it and instantly, we say "That's American Airlines". And it looks great. NYC Int'l said something interesting about the savings they make with this livery. Actually, I've read in a book - and I just couldn't believe it - that AA was saving 360 M$/year in fuel costs just by polishing its MD-80 instead of painting them. I would definitively keep it.

Sabena.
Please! Do something! Put some colors, some shapes to spice it up!

British Airways.
I would turn back to the last paint scheme, that was much better and looked more serious and credible, although the new one is not bad at all.

Aer Lingus.
Can't even see the clover leaf on the tail, it's too tone-on-tone. And the rest is a poor design job.

Air 2000.
I think this one is in the top of my "Ugliests Top 10". What a mess! I've never seen such a waste of colors. Give me the name of the marketing company that created it to be sure that I will never hire them. ... And have you seen this ugly paint scheme with the "AeroContinente" markings?   geezzzz....

Air Europa
The previous one didn't look great but it was much better than the new one.

Ok, now, let's talk about Canada 3000. JAT said:

JAT, you're 100% right. Canada 3000 makes us pay less for air travel. That's what really counts for CMM: low fares and they make it. Although it's not the best livery I've seen (far from that), I like it in some way cause I find it original (yes, original!   ). The colors and the shape of their cheatline look nice. And who wanted to change their name... AeroAussi. You don't like it? Canada 3000 is easy to say in French, English, Spanish, Italian... and it's more original than... "Canadian International", or "American Airlines". Don't you think so? It's so original that I just can't tell you where they find that name!!

Air Transat
The previous livery was good; the new one is good too! When I see one of their planes flying over me at FL25, I can read "Air Transat" without any difficulty because their markings are so large and bold! It looks perfect.

Among those I really like are Continental Airlines(looks clean but not plain, classy tail), Northwest(no one's like this one with its rich red and gray tones. Good job). Also, I really like Airtours International. The tail's a masterpiece.

I like Southwest Airlines Present livery, it puts class into the Airline, Continental's Livery is cool, keep that one along with SWA for another 10-15 years, Delta
this livery 2000 sucks horrendously. Can't you think of something better, like haven't you ever heard of another color than WHITE. It just isn't looking good Delta. American, well, y'all need to think of a change soon. like a more stylish American and a designer line. Aer Lingus is Ok, ANA is Boring. Canada3000 get a life.

Look at that tail. It says LOT and a the same time it's a diagram of an airplane. It's one of the most imaginative liveries ever.

Air 2000's livery was designed by Landor Associates, which designed the liveries for Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Varig, Delta (old new livery) and British Airways (old livery) and a fair few more. I like it, it manages to be both smart and colourful

As for Canada 3000 livery being original - didn't they take it directly from the airline mentioned above?:-l

If you want to know where CMM got their name, do a search for my username, and find the topic entitled;
"Canada 3000: Time to reconfigure 757s?" a couple of weeks back.

Sorry, but I disagree with everything you said apart from Air Transat. Guess we don't exactly have the same taste in liveries

The Airtours tail is actually a design taken from the shop front of the Going Places travel agency chain in the UK!

I know that Air 2000 and Canada 3000 shared the same livery from their founding respectively in 1987 and 1988, until Air 2000 changed its paint scheme, but they did so because they were almost the same airline, because of their financial agreements. So, before, I used to say that the Air 2000 and Canada 3000 liveries were both original - cause the same. So, if Canada 3000 had the same livery than Air 2000, it was not because they were suffering of a lack of originality, but because they were almost a "2-in-1" airline. And I still find it original. The gold cheatline is slim and looks clean, and there's a nice curve on the tail. It's an ageless livery. The only thing I don't like from CMM is that they don't have a real logo. The square letters beside a red maple leaf is not what I use to call a logo.

So that's it. By the way, I respect the fact that you don't like the liveries I do like.   This is a thing we name "tastes" and we can't discuss them. And after all, it's just paint schemes. And it's just commercial aviation.

Regards,

CharterFlyer

P.S. I've been very surprised when you said that Air 2000's livery was created by Landor. I've read a lot on it. You're right, it's a very prestigious firm.

The Real Question

Fri May 12, 2000 3:13 pm

We've discussed/argued about how good/bad liveries of carriers such as AA, SWA, and DL2000 are. The question is, how likely is it that some of the more dated liveries (e.g. AA and SWA) will change within the next 10 years?

747-600X, BWIA HAS a new paint scheme which made its debut in December 1999 on one of their L-1011 TriStar 500s. It has since appeared on its new 737-800s which are now being delivered. The steelpan which is the national musical instrument of Trinidad and Tobago is boldly featured on the tail and nose and portrays a strong Caribbean image.

Kudos also to Air Jamaica, whose flamboyant new image is a great change from its older, sedate one.

American's scheme is classy, evergreen in its style and simple to maintain - why change it? Air Canada's new style is also simple but yet sophisticated. I think that its change from the flame red was indeed a good thing. As for changes - Delta's new scheme is uninspiring, United's is again simply sophisticated, US Airways ditto United. A fancy scheme is great but then a good, classy, simple one will also do the trick. Ugly paintjobs really do nothing to market the airline.

British Airways shoul change back to the other color scheme before the world images. I like the Delta tail but they could use a cheat line across the windows. AA needs to keep the planes clean the livery is just fine. US Airways is a bit too dark but much better than their other scheme. TWA, Virgin, UAL and CO look great.

I have to agree that the new Delta livery is pretty disappointing. I also think that Singapore Airlines and American Airlines need a new paint job. I disagree about TWA's scheme - I think it's too cluttered, and about Air Canada - I think its simple and sophisticated. A lot of airlines have the white bodies - which look pretty bland -like Lufthansa and Air France.

Southwest's and American's colors are a lot better than some of the other schemes out there. I think Spirit Airlines needs more color on its planes or a new scheme altogether. If Spirit wants to grow and become a major airline it must try to look as good as the other major carriers. I also think that Monarch Airlines desperately needs change. The Black and yellow scheme is disgusting in itself, and their planes are not kept clean so it looks even worse. That's my opinion. I agree that the Air France and EL-AL aircraft need more color. US Airways is pretty smart for painting their planes mostly black and grey. It hides all of the dirt that accumilates on the rear of the plane. I still don't understand why Delta needs a new livery after they just released one. I think Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, and TWA all have great color schemes.

Southwest has been unchanged since the 70's. Can you imagine an all white SW 737? YUCK! DL2000... no thought. Anyone can make white. Someone gives you paper and asks you to design a livery. You either use color and take your time or you write a name on it and hand it in. Hey Delta! Juat because others are doing it dosen't mean you have to!! Well, they're smoking pot. I could do the right thing or I could join them. And what did they do? They took the pot. Oh yeah. You don't have to change the livery every year! Below is my opinion on who has a good livery and who dosen't.

People nowadyas want something original and great!! The airline's so far rarely deliver. Madness!!!   LOL, that was fun.
I really wish airline's would spice things up, plane colors are getting really boring. (You just wait 'till you see PWA!! I'm sure that'll be a sight for sore eyes!!) LOL

Just wait, a new airline is going to start up in just over a decade that'll turn everything around, and her name is Pacific World Airways. Ooohhh!! Just you wait.....

Landor seems to have messed up with Delta's new one - not a good sign that it's not well-received here. I know I love the pre-merger CP one lots more.

Regarding my personal taste: Singapore, Malaysia, EgyptAir, Alitalia need at least an evolution in their liveries. ANA could use better lettering.

Sounds like a lot of you would rather not see white liveries... maybe we need carriers who do it like Braniff used to. Not the whole range...even 1 or 2 colors could have enough impact.

I'd like to see someone try dark blue (with a hint of purple which brings it to life), deep yellow-orange, or dark green (as seen on AC's tail).
