What's Smoking In This Picture?

Thu Sep 22, 2005 5:47 am

This VS 747 hasn't just touched down (unless it's just flown with a tow truck attached to it for the duration of its flight!) so it's not tyres so what else could it be?

Or is it exhaust from the tow truck?

Cheers!!

The exhaust was probably coming from the engine. When you start up a jet engine a small puff of smoke can normally be seen. I am not sure why (you need an aviation expert for that explanation).

Start up of the engines. More noticiable on a cooler day.

Yer, it is just the engines starting.

If you own a Diesel powered engine (in your car) then when you start the engine, a lot of smoke comes out of the exhaust.

Thanks

The smoke usualy happens when a engine starts up, it is very visible on cold mornings or evenings at LHR!

Mine doesn't!! I've got a Transit van as well with a 180,000 miles on the clock and that doesn't smoke either! (Mind you it's rare to get the f*cker started at all these days!!!)

I had no idea these jet engines smoked when it was cold, makes sense I suppose - hot air into cold etc etc.

Fuel vapor.....if the conditions are right (temp, humidity and such) this happens quite often. Also, if the pilot or mechanic running the eng. puts the fuel on even a hair too soon you can get a nice stream of vapor out the tailpipe.

Mind you, that is 10+ years old. (He doesn't want to get rid of it, because it is so reliable. I wish he would though, the shape isn't all that nice  Smile )
