Top 10 Delta Markets

Thu Sep 22, 2005 11:56 am

With talk of potential schedule changes at Delta as a result of the carriers recent Ch11 filing, I ran across some interesting data on the airlines markets from DOT statistics for the first half of 2005.

ATL-LAS, really? I would think that would be high on the passenger count list, but not revenues, normally LAS flights are relatively cheap. Cool if it is true, maybe more DL 764's in LAS.  Wink

With all the talk we had a few days ago about Atlanta to Ft. Lauderdale being a huge market....where is it on this list then?

Yes ATL-LAS generates 621 daily O&D passengers producing about $90,000 in revenue, yielding a little over 8 cents.
I suppose it does not say much of Delta or the entire industry pricing structure having so many leisure routes being considered the best revenue generators.

ATL-FLL is #16 of Delta's top local O&D routes with 578 daily passengers. The route however very likely has an overall larger significance to the Delta network as it most likely has lots of Atlanta transfer passengers flying.

I find it pretty interesting that of Delta top-10 City Pair markets, half are Song routes.

What I'd find more interesting, considering the inevitable cuts on the horizon now that DL is in Ch11, are these lists, if anyone has them:

- Top DL *mainline* market share stations. No, 95% at TWF does not count.
- Top DL *mainline* citypairs in terms of load factor
- Top DL *mainline, non-hubbed* citypairs

I dont have this specifically, however I can add some additional info my initial top-10 city pair list of daily O&D passengers in terms of what Delta market share and average yield are.

1.ATL-NYC 64% 16.70cents
2.NYC-MCO 34% 9.78cents
3.NYC-FLL 21% 8.81cents
4.ATL-WAS 63% 21.04cents
5.NYC-PBI 29% 9.49cents
6.NYC-BOS 40% 61.14cents
7.NYC-WAS 32% 51.36cents
8.BOS-MCO 41% 8.71cents
9.NYC-TPA 30% 8.33cents
10.ATL-MCO 71% 24.03cents

Also to round out the Top-10 top routes in terms of daily O&D pax, they were:
11.ATL-LAX
12.BOS-FLL
13.ATL-LAS
14.ATL-DFW
15.ATL-PHL
16.ATL-FLL
17.ATL-TPA
18.NYC-LAX
19.ATL-BOS
20.BOS-RSW

Delta divides domestic service into different regions in the US.
Southeast Region (AL,FL,GA,KY,MS,NC,SC,TN,WV,VA) account for 43.9% of DL revenues and produce an average yield of 13.44cents
Northeast (CT,DC,DE,MA,MD,ME,NH,NJ,NY,PA,RI,VT) 22.3%, 11.13cents
North Central (IA,IL,IN,MI,MN,MO,OH,WI) 8%, 13.29cents
West Central (CO,ID,KS,MT,ND,NE,SD,UT,WY) 4.8%, 11.30cents
Western (AZ,CA,NV,OR,WA) 12%, 7.73cents
South Central (AR,LA,NM,OK,TX) 7.4%, 13.77cents

I do also have all DL 2004 international traffic data, however for now we'll stick to the domestic data.

Why wouldn't it. If a carrier provides mainline service and is a sole provider for that airport why shouldn't it be recognized.

With that:

DL's top market share mainline station is MLB with 100%.

I'm sure it is overall in the top 10 but maybee not specificaly for Delta. Most O/D in Chicago flys UA/AA/LV

Probably somewhere in the Top 20. All of those airports in the top 10 are either hubs or focus cities. I would even go so far as saying that O&D-wise for Delta, even CMH and RDU are ahead of ORD.

Wow, those yields out west are REALLY underperfoming the system. Is this thanks to WN and HP?

Very interesting. I'm surprised the West Coast does so poorly for DL. I thought they would've done better especially on routes like LAX-JFK, LAX-HNL/OGG, LAX-MCO, etc... Perhaps they just don't have enough service to warrant being on the "A" list.

How are they doing internationally? Best performing, high load flights?

I don't think DL's alone here. Yields out here are just lower...

It's missing the point: I was hoping to find out which DL markets were their biggest success in terms of its share of passengers vis a vis competitors. Anyone could serve MLB, and everyone besides DL has decided it's not worth it. Hence, no competitors, and not really in scope.

No its everyone has decided it isn't worth competiting with DL's market share. Thanks to DL's presence no one wants to serve it. Few have tried and none have been successful.

Then I guess you are looking for CVG at 91%.

Can someone please explain what a yield is? I thought I understood, but the fact that I am seeing yields at .12 cents, I have no clue what they are. Thanks!

Actually ORD does not even make the Top-20 for Delta.

Remaining Top 11-20 airports for Delta in terms of daily boardings are
11.DFW
12.LAS
13.DCA
14.PBI
15.BDL
16.JAX
17.RSW
18.DEN
19.SFO
20.RDU

Quoting UN_B732 (Reply 12):

Yes the Western region yields are indeed in the toilet. One reason certainly for this is that Delta operates mostly medium/long haul domestic flights from the West Coast which drive down the yield. If they had lots of short hops which traditionally produce yields in the region, then the overall numbers would likely be higher.
Also much of the flying in places like LAX, LAS have become Song over the year, while flying to the Atlanta hub now faces competition from Airtran whom has succesfully managed to move West.

Quoting LUV4JFK (Reply 14):

Yes. Except when specifically mentioning airports in daily boardings were LGA is #2, JFK #8, and EWR #22.
