CO/Rita: Where Are The Planes Going?

Fri Sep 23, 2005 12:17 am

As it is now looking more and more like Hurricane Rita is not only going to be a rather strong hurricane when it makes landfall tomorrow/Saturday, but also that it looks to hit the Houston metro area head-on, I'm assuming that Continental (and ExpressJet) is going to be evacuating all aircraft/equipment from its largest hub at IAH.

My question is: where are all of those dozens (perhaps hundreds) of airplanes going to be flown to so they can ride out the storm?

I imagine that CO, like all carriers, has as pre-planned list of where they will send a/c in case any station, hub or non-hub, is impacted by a major event.

They will be scattered throughout the system. Those aircraft that were slated to remain overnight in IAH on Friday night, will simply stay in the outlying stations, to be parked till the system can be put back in sync.

EWR and CLE won't see all the aircraft, and it's doubtful CO would add any flights because of the storm.

You'll likely see some ferried into places like Fort Worth, San Antonio, El Paso, etc. depending on the storm track tomorrow. They'll want to keep them close to ease resumption of operations.

I saw 3 CO 737s today sitting at ORD near the international terminal. Where are some of the other ones, and how many are being sheltered at other airports?

a 752 (N14120) hardstanded off one of the old DL gates on B in front of
the Pacific Marketplace food court.

For those wondering, we placed 11 planes out in ELP, 1 each in DFW and ABQ. Of the 11 in ELP, 2 767s and 757s, 3 73Gs and 738s and one 735.

At EWR yesterday CO had 14 737s parked on the Terminal A hardstand, they also had some 757s, and 777s parked there too.

IAH operations resume this morning.

I flew out of AUS the other night. A CO 737 and an ExpressJet ERJ were parked on hardstand across the tarmac from the CO gate area.
