CO And Its Aircraft....

Fri Sep 23, 2005 1:19 am

I had a question, I understand that there are severl topics relating about CO, and hurricane rita etc...

But I have a quesiotion and anybody that could help will be great.
CO or any other airline will fly there aircraft else where in the event of a hurricane. To what airports do they send there aircraft to.

For example will they send them south to MFE,HRL, or BRO
or will they send them to there hubs, but I know sometimes they send aircraft to non hubs.

any facts will be greatly considered.

CO, like most other airlines, will try to reposition the aircraft anywhere theres room to stick them. Ideally it would be close enough they don't burn as much fuel getting them safe, however, certain cities only have so much room.
In addition, CO is usually very proactive when it comes to bad weather, so they will end up canceling IAH turns and routing usually as far out as today. This means a IAH-STL flight that supposed to turn back to IAH will spend the next few days at STL, thus maximizing revenue flying and cutting back on the ferry flights.
There is also a problem of places like CLE and EWR then getting all these extra planes due to changed routing, and both places are rather squeezed on space as it is. In that case cities close to EWR and CLE with some room may get some ferry flights (ABE, GRR, MKE, BUF, ERI, etc) just to get them out of the way, and so when the time comes, the aircraft can be quickly dispatched.

Hope this helps, I'll let you know more when I go back to work tomorrow and see how things are, or aren't going.

So what are the odds of CO aircraft coming down to Airports in deep South TX, especially in MFE, because if so, I have some spotting to do!

I think CO is going to send alot of their IAH aircraft to EWR, CLE and MCO where they have a maintenance base.

Most unlikely.

This isn't like the Air Force which flies it's plane out of a hurricane's path and then parks them until they can go back.

We're dealing with airlines that have to carry passengers to pay for the planes that are being re-scheduled.

ABE is also often a diversion airport (mainly for ExpressJet ERJ's) for storms/wx in EWR, so I'll definitely be taking a trip up Airport Road to see what can be seen hanging out up there.

As for ERI, considering only Commutair goes there (out of CO), and the runway is relatively short, I'm not too sure about there, but if you work for ExpressJet and say so, I'll take your word for it.

ERI has long been used as an alternate for CLE. The main question is if they will need to displace any aircraft there because, as of right now they have started parking planes in the outstations.

That settles that, but it leads to one question:

Is that for when CLE is getting 1/8 mi VIS in heavy snow at 3" per hour, and ERI is only getting "flurries" (as the locals would call it) of 1/4mi VIS in moderate snow at 1" per hour?  Wink

Any chance that AUS will get any diversions on Sat? Also where is Peter Max? I bet they are protecting that 777 being it's so famous. Hope all goes well at IAH and HOU.

This isn't entirely true. While the gate space is an issue at peak bank times, there is a lot of room to park aircraft at CLE. There is CO maintinence, Air Services, the IX Center ramp (which is very large) and the pads that used to be runway 18/36. I'd imagine that some of the CLE-IAH flights will end up being parked at CLE for a while.

How about the flights inbound to MFE,HRL,BRO, will they be cancelled, and if so, where would the aircraft go?

Since they would be cancelled, they would most likely be at another outstation because they couldn't make it into IAH.

That means that the aircraft would be to the prior airport before it gets to IAH, then makes the next connection to Valley airports, right?

Hey a.netters, I've read some threads about CO canceling flights and what not

I need help on something, I was checking flight availabilities on CO's website, and I input a flight from MFE-IAH and back for 9-23, and 9-24, there's only 1 or 2 flights round trip. I'm pretty sure this is because of the hurricane, but I noticed that they're sending 737-800's and 1 737-300, why not send larger aircraft, maybe like a 757-200/300 since there's only such avalible flights.

Also checked for BRO and HRL, and it seems there are no flights avalible, why is this?
Is it because of expressjet?

Maybe because those planes will be in LAX, SEA, MCO, EWR, CLE, TPA, etc.

What are the chances that cities that don't normally get CLE service ( OKC , GSO , and many more) getting flights to CLE to help get people where they need to go ?

Most will not be sent anywhere. They will just cancel the return segment to IAH and the aircraft will remain were it is. If gate space gets tight at that airport, they'll just push it off the gate to a remote parking spot.

This is almost exactly the plan.... CO will operate 48 morning arrivals and 55 pre-noon departures on the 23rd. The aircraft will ramain at that destination city until Sunday the 25th (...Or Perhaps longer.. Depending on what Rita does to IAH)

Any updates on where CO and COEx are placing their fleet besides out-stations and other hubs? Have they secured enough crews to evacuate from IAH after ops are suspended?

ATTENTION: my question and topic was answered!
Just in from the local News paper here in McAllen, Texas

from Airport Director Darald Lary quote: "McAllen has offered safe haven for up to seven Boeing 737s and as many as 10 regional jets at the airport, Lary said. While those airplanes likely won’t have passengers, McAllen also could receive airplanes diverted away from Houston that are carrying passengers, probably from Central America and South America."

I guess the operational damage is made and therefore I don't thing it would be possible for CO to reinstate (if it as possible) some of the flights. Having said that, I still think that the predicted 80MPH winds will shut the airport anyway

It seems like they sent a couple (or more) aircraft to each station. Everyone seems to have a couple spare CO aircraft sitting around. Here at MSP, we've had 2 735's sitting around doing nothing. Worked out well in one circumstance - had one aircraft break, so we actually (begrudgingly  Wink ) swapped to another airplane, which is rare for an outstation.
