Difficult Landings For Pilots

Does anyone know which airports have the most difficult (challenging) landings for pilots, both in th US and abroad?

I'd imagine LGA is fairly tough.

The most difficult landings is at Washington Reagan National Airport. The approach make turn right into RWY 19 along Potmac River. Also, Orange County AIrport is in Santa Ana, Cailfornia (SNA) is the shortest runway (5,700FT) to landing on the meduim aircraft handles 757 and A320 everyday. Also, most difficult to land at Dutch Harbor, Alaska has 3,900 FT with a Alaska's 737-200 everyday. A little bit quite difficult in Burbank airport is too narrow taxiway along the runway.

Telluride, Colorado.

gusty winds and low vis; maybe not the most difficult, but if you go missed you'll be counting beads (if you're catholic that is)

Boy I was going to mention Dutch but somebody beat me too it!!!!

I actually flew in there once on a 737, Markair not Alaska.....It was....Shall we say interesting....

We should mention the approach into Juneau AK. as being particually challenging to do also....You are flying on instruments into a fjord basicly.

I forgot to mention that Dutch Harbor is 3900' now......It was quite a bit shorter and unpaved when the 737 ops first began.

These two shots are of Dutch Today and are from the FAA......I should mention the weather is not usually as nice as it is in that picture. The third one is a shot of the original airstrip that was taken during the war.....Hard to belive that the Navy flew PBY's out of it. That curve in the runway isn't an optical illusion...I got that photo via the National Archives

This fascinates me! How can a 737 possibly operate safely from a 3900ft runway! That is so absurd! I can imagine the breaking and FULL REVERSE THRUSTERS, as soon as the wheels touch down at Dutch Harbor. Does the FAA have a special exemption for the 737-200 to land on this runway? Alaska's 737 MUST be equipped with special breaks, I would imagine. Any one care to comment any further on this subject. How about some AS pilots out there? Thanks.

Alaska Airlines operates 737s into some of the toughest airports in the U.S. and the World!

Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau!
The Juneau approach in particuar is a thriller!

And according to FAA computer models, the "Lemon Creek" takeoff at Juneau is a crash and burn every time, yet AS crew do it every day!

Only the -200 models make the Dutch run. Yes you do get thrown forward in your seat pretty roughly.

There aren't any changes to the brakes.....They just use them really hard....But still the problems isn't getting the aircraft in...It is getting it out again. The 737 is limited to a 98,000lb takeoff weight, Normally they weight closer to 130.000 lbs for takeoff.....Is they any 37 drivers that can give a better number out there.

I don't have any good photo imaging equiptment but it looks like there is an AK 737 in the two color shots on the middle one there appears to be an aircraft parked on the near edge of the ramp....Right next to the passenger terminal. It looks white so it could be a NAC DC-6 but their building is about two buildings over.....Any tech wiz with a good image enhansing program want to take a shot at identifing the aircraft????

I have landed and taken off at Dutch Harbor in Lockheed Electras, and it seemed that the instant we touched down, the props went into full reverse. I thought something was wrong. Do you see that island in the water in the top picture that is in line with the approach end of the runway? It sticks up, and I thought we were going to clip it on final approach. And on takeoff, we banked to the right in a sharp turn almost immediately after we broke ground. I was almost afraid to look out the window, because I was sure I would see the wingtip strike the ground. But we made it. It was one of my most heart-stopping landings and takeoffs.

Ahh, I forgot you mentioned that Telluride, Colorado if missed approach too Bad!!. But the most dangerous missed approach is in Cape Newenham, Alaska. You cannot use miss approach RWY 14. The runway elevation is 230 feet touchdown you landing rolling went uphill end of runway 32 elevation is 541 feet. That's a scary to death hit the mountain if you are really miss runway!! :[] Oh boy!!!

The only other airport, I can think of, in the world, that has a simiiar VERY SHORT runway is London's LCY. They accept jets, but only the BAE/Avro RJ's, as far as I know. These aircraft are specifically designed for that type of runway, however. But a 737, come on! Must be like landing on an aircraft carrier, at Dutch Harbor. Hell, some general aviation airports have runways longer than that, for pete's sake! Boca Raton, FL has 5000ft, but only limited to private jets, such as Gulfstreams or Citations.

Well since we are talking about dangerous approaches and somebody else came up with Cape Newenham, I figured a few pictures is needed to show that airport too. It should be noted that Cape Newenham is a military strip to support a DEW line station.

The First Photo is by Don Bowers. It is from the Firebirds website These nuts flew ski equipted C-130's up here and on the Greenland ice pack for a number of years. Note the radar domes of the base on the upper right hand peak.




This photo is also from the Firebirds website. It is by Roy Jared and is taken from the right seat of a C-130 landing at Cape Newenham.






I don't have any pictures of it but my understanding that the landing strip at Sparrevohn LRRS is even more exciting.
