NW Nonstop LAS-MSN?!?!?

Sat Sep 24, 2005 9:51 am

Hey everyone! I was just looking for Christmas tickets back home to LAS, and I came across on the NW website, an itinerary that departed LAS at 11:55PM, and arrived in MSN at 5:20AM. When I just looked for a booking LAS-MSN, it brought up that one nonstop flight. Why would there be a nonstop flight? Is there really that much demand? Also, what aircraft is operated on the route? It just seems really crazy that this flight would exist, but maybe that is just me, lol. Sorry if this has been discusses before. Thanks in advance.  Big grin

DOH, I just realized that Allegiant flies LAS-MSN-LAS, is that why NW hopped onto the route? *pounds head on table*

NW has launched a flurry of new routes to LAS. Like MSN/GRR/FNT and some others to LAS. This is using the aircraft when they would be idle overnight, great idea in my opinion. NW should be able to make it work.

Ya, it sounds like a good idea, but is it profitable?

This is Northwest we are talking about. Northwest is well-known for using the effective equivalent of Weapons of Mass Destruction to kill a gnat. They started these routes for no other reason than to chase off Allegiant, so they can then cancel the service, and then fly those passengers via Minneapolis-St. Paul and Detroit.

According to Iowaman, its cheaper to fly LAS-FSD-MSP than it is to fly LAS-MSP. NW is really stepping over a dollar to save a quarter here.

You mean the same NW that announced these intentions to eventually do this almost 2 years ago?

MSN is the only one that is a red eye. They also are starting FAR/FSD/DSM-LAS.

Yes, when searching certain dates in Dec. that was true.

That may be true, but the FNT-LAS was to attack AirTran, as times and fares are the exact same.

But how much more could NW "attack" others who start midwest service? It sems like they need to start worrying about how to stay alfloat and come up with a plan instead of going after an airline everytime it starts service in certain cities.

With NWA's wonderful onboard service:
1) Meal- trail mix
2) Snack- the crumbs left on the seat from the passenger who brought their last meal onboard from the terminal food court
3) Beverage- the moisture you can suck out of the cabin or the blue toilet water in the lav

As cheap as this airline is, they could make it work better than anyone. NWA...The true "no frills" airline!

Well, with NW in bankruptcy, they don't have to pay some bills. Therefore, they can afford to fly those LAS routes.

Seemingly no one has decided to pay attention to the facts, and just attack NW, so allow me to enlighten the proletariat.

Allegiant has already announced their intentions to suspend the route on October 31st. Northwest begins service that day.

When NW announced its intentions to resume certain nonstop routes from MKE, everyone criticized it as a move to try and squeeze YX out so they could once again revert to hub-only operations. Well, three years later, most of they key routes are still flying. For that matter, LAX was recently upgraded to a 320, and they've added a second daily seasonal LAS flight.

So, before anyone casts aspersions about Northwest's intentions, remember the facts.

Are you saying that Allegiant was already leaving and NW is coming in to fill a gap? Sorry no, that wasn't the timeline.

Allegiant said they were pulling the service AFTER Northwest announced they were starting the route. NW announced LAS-MSN on August 10. Allegiant put out the word they would drop LAS-MSN a month later on September 13.

So isn't that what posters are saying, that NW was trying to chase off Allegiant? And succeeded?

Mlsrar...Sorry, but you obviously work for NWA and you have my sympathy. Try being a First Class passenger on one of your flights and you will understand why their the worst things going. Have a problem after the flight? NWA's customer service is practically non existent. Don't expect me to write anything nice!

LAS-GRR is also a red-eye:

NWA 324, GRR-LAS 9:00 pm - 10:05 pm
NWA 325, LAS-GRR 11:10 pm - 5:55 am
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

Thats not strange...in the summer NWA runs MKE-CUN on saturdays and the flights are usually booked solid.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

I'm surprised they do it in the summer (why?), but in any case, according to this poster - reply #10 - it isn't coming back:

NWA at MKE? See link above, reply #10, which deals with cuts at both IND and MKE.

If I could make a wish, it would be that Allegiant would fight back hard core and launch LAS-MSP, LAS-DTW and DTW-MSP so that NW would stop the attack. Of course even though NW is in bankruptcy, they still have deeper pockets. I am curious though if one day they will go head to head with someone that has soem cash and could outlast them. The upper midwest might be released from the grip of NW's high fares. I fly out of RFD (Rockford Illinois), and NW is the only scheduled carrier, and their fares are astronomical.

and i go to school ($10 if you guess which school) in GFK - NW being the only airline here, i have yet to see a fare below $300 to anywhere besides MSP - and even that hovers 200-300. Paid $324 to fly home last year for a weekend.
The time after that i went on UA out of FAR for $212

That's a regular fare to many many places here from ABE... and we've got United, US, NW, DL, CO for the legacies, Hooters, Transmeridian for LCC/Charters, etc.
