Longest Non-stop 737-300/400/500 Routes.

Mon Sep 26, 2005 2:42 pm

I was wondering what the longest non-stop 737 (old generation) route that was currently operating - past or present.

Did any of these ever operate trans-con flights in the US (eg. LAX-JFK or SFO-BOS) or would I be right in assuming the A319/A320 aircraft were the first aircrafts in this market/size to fly these kind of routes.

In Europe I would asume some of the longest 737 routes are operated from Scandanavia to the Canary Islands. I know Helios Airways occassionally operates their 733's from LTN-LCA which is a route of about 1750 miles, when their 738's are doing other business.

Sobelair used their 737 OG from Brussels to Ovda, must be around 3500km.

I recall US operating 734's to PHL, CLT, and PIT from LAS in the mid 1990's. Almost trans-con routes.

Qantas use the 737-400 (and previously their -300s) on transcon routes to Perth and also up north to Darwin - these must be contenders also.

Don't quote me on this, but I remember reading somewhere in this forum a while back that WN has/had occasionally dispatched 735's from BWI to the west coast (I don't quite remember the exact cities). OPNLguy (a WN employee) can perhaps shed some light and correct my memory.

Cheers!

Edit: I have been unable to locate the similar threads I recall reading. My apologies.

B737-400: OSLLPA on Scandinavian, 2549 miles
B737-500: YVRYYZ on C6 (what is C6?), 2089 miles

Isn't there an airline in Panama that fly the length of S America with 737s? Don't know the airport codes so I can't look it up. And, USAir definitely flew LAX to CLT overnight red-eyes with the 737, before they got the A320s. Weight restricted they may have been, but they definitely did the flight.

Dartland,
Tell me about it. Up until recently I was going to school out there and I took that flight several times. The only thing that made the flight somewhat enjoyable was the fact that every time I was on it it was empty. CO also had EWR-PHX on the 733 several years back. When I flew that they did have TV monitors though.

Icelandair used to fly the 737-400 on transatlantic flights. I believe that they flew the 734 from Keflavík to Halifax and to some Florida destinations on a seasonal or charter basis.

C6 also does some sun flights on behalf of Sunquest in the winter - any of those top YVR-YYZ? (actually, I think the Van flight stops in YYC on the way over and back).

I do remember Icelandair flying YHZ-KEF back in the day - that MUST have been a long one....

Braathens flew 125-seat 735s regularly OSL-LPA which is 4100 km, Maersk Air flew the 149-seat 733 OSL-LPA. The 734 flying with Braathens did not have the range to fly OSL-LPA IIRC as they had 156 seats in them, but perhaps they can now with only 150 seats and 80% load factor...

SA)">U2 used to have their 733s on LON-ATH which is quite a long stretch, and SA and Comair I think still fly their older 732s into central Africa (at least SA's 732s were common as far north as NBO)

Actually, they do, thanks to their merger with Braathens.

Is CO's CLE-ABQ opped with a 737? I seem to remember it being a 735. Also, I believe they operate them on some IAH-Northeast routes as well. While probably not close to the longest flights a Classic operates, they're long flights without IFE  Wink.

I beleive the longest ever 737 flight was with a 500 or 600 between Casablanca and Jo'burg with RAM. It operated once week. Later it routed through Libreville and then was dropped.

Air Algerie at one time operated 737-200s non-stop ALG-SVO. Later PRG became an intermediate stop.

TAESA used to operate 733's OAK-Leon/BJX until they were grounded.

I believe TAROM still uses 733's OTP-DXB.

Astraeus operate the 737-300 (148 seats) on LGW-DBB/HBE (El Alamein and Alexandria Egypt) -great circle route is 2069 miles, and LBA-LCA at 2149 miles.
We used to fly LGW-URA (Uralsk, Khazakstan) which was 2202 miles.

Remember, any flight on a NW Airbus A319/A319 now is just as bad as flying on a transcon 737 second gen on say CO or US, because obviously they removed all of their IFE...

Nothing record breaking but here are Alaska's longest 737-400 routes:
SFO-ZIH: 1,874 miles
SEA-ORD: 1,715
PDX-ANC: 1,542
LAX-ZIH: 1,538
SEA-FAI: 1,533

I believe that SEA-DFW will soon go to 737s, if it does then that route is 1,660 miles. I'm glad AS doesn't use these birds on anything longer, they weren't designed to go transcon. Leave that to the 73G/8/9s.

The 737s US used for transcons were a subfleet equipped with extra tanks. (They were the 733s whose registered N5xx and the 734s registered N7xx, if anyone's curious.) The 733s had better range than the 734s, though; the 734s were mostly used only to LAS/DEN and BDA/etc--the 734s were EOW equipped, the 733s were not.

Edited to add: The tanks have long since been removed.

Isn't there an airline in Panama that fly the length of S America with 737s? Don't know the airport codes so I can't look it up.

CM flies B737-700/800, They never had -300/400/500 only -100/200; longest they ever flew non-stop w/B737-200 was PTY-LIM.

EWRMUC on LH, 4042 miles
EWRZRH on LX, 3932 miles

Well, those flights operated on Privatair aircraft are all business-class, if with economy/business CM PTY > EZE, GRU, SCL, LAX are the longest B737-700/800.

Back around 1990 TACA flew the 733 SAL-SFO, 4248 km-- the OAG said nonstop but somebody said it wasn't really.

True, It was a SFO red-eyed departure.

UA did IAD-PTY with 733's in the early to min 90's 1790 NM

UA flew MIA-PTY, don't know for sure if that flight originated in IAD. Maybe it was IAD-SJO not IAD-PTY

didnt operate RG for some time the BOG flight from GRU with B737 old generation or was the flight via MAO?

RG used to fly B737-300 MAO > BOG, PTY.

I think you are right. My friend was an FO on UA based at IAD ands I remember she did a lot of PTY and SJO.

IAD-SJO is 1769 NM which is 21 miles less than PTY.
Golf Foxtrot you are cleared for departure
