DFW Terminal Improvements

Mon Sep 26, 2005 4:16 pm

I know it has been discussed at some lenght before but DFW will move all of Terminal B tenents to Terminal E, which will get a makeover and Eagle will move all of its domestic operations to B.

Also I would be interested in what other information anyone may have on this.

Overall, this is good news, except I still can't believe they are having problems with the Terminal D baggage system (come on!).

With the A satellite going away, will all of Eagle be moving to B? Will this finally be the death-knell to the board-by-bus system for the Eagle gates?

That's the plan, apparently. Eagle wants to consolidate all of their flights in a single place like the pre-RJ days, as having two seperate operations -- especially seperated by a highway, as at DFW -- is grossly innefficient. B is perfect for Eagle, as all the extraneous DFW airlines (sans UA and perhaps US, apparently) can easily move to a now-empty E. In addition, AA can then lay claim to all or most of the A-B-C-D terminal complex at DFW. Wow!

Perhaps. Although, I still don't understand how they are going to handle SAAB boarding without the smaller jetbridges of the A Satellite. Are those jetbridges going to be moved over to B?

I don't care about boarding a Saab via jetbridge, I'd just much rather be able to walk out onto the tarmac and right onto the plane than taking that bumpy bus ride!

If UA and/or US don't move, doesn't that mean that AA will have to split up their operation at Terminal B - US/HP is at B18-24 and UA at B28-B30. That would leave AA with B2-B16 and then B31-B39.

AA would happily rather have Eagle split between B2-B16 and B31-B39 rather than between B2-B16 and A2A-L. While it will not be the optimum set up with UA/US in between Eagle flights, it sure improves on having two seperate operations across the airport and highway.

In fact, maybe Eagle could purposefully split up their Eagle operations on Terminal B with all the RJs on B2-B16 and all the SAABs on B31-B39. That makes sense to me, at least.

With the skylink, all connections are easy nowadays.

I don't know how Eagle would be satisfied with this, there would not be nearly enough gates for all of the RJ's at DFW. It may satisfy current demand, but it would prohibit any future growth.

DFW will do whatever necessary to keep AA happy, even if it means sweetening the pot to get UA and US to move over to "E"...

There was a meeting today regarding terminal E. There will be a consolidation of the checkpoints. There are currently 2 checkpoints in section A (DL, NW, CO) that will be combined to 1. There are 2 checkpoints in section B (DL, FL, AS) that will be combined to 1. There is 1 checkpoint in section C that will be increased. The remodeled checkpoints will have more queueing. This is the best solution for now.

F9, TZ, and YX were supposed to move in to section C. I found out today that YX is not moving since they sublease their gate from US. As mentioned, US an UA are not moving.

There are some other improvements to E. The glass walls at the gates that led to the custom area will be taken down to increase the gate area.

There will be some baggage system upgrades, new bag rooms, etc.

The airport's long term plan calls for baggage claim areas to be moved off the upper level with the ticket counters and new space created on the lower level (like most airports).

There will also be new FIDS monitors installed on both the land and air side. There are some on the air side now. There are 10 flat screen TV's in each bank of FIDS that cost over $100,000.

There will also be shared self-serve check-in kiosks that all of the airlines will use.

Overall, a lot of little things to improve the customer experience.
