Airport To Be Built On St. Helena Island

Wow ! A new airport in the South Atlantic !
As the article says, runway lenght will be 2250 meters, to accomodate "long haul aircraft like the A320 and B737-800".

Is 2250 meters long enough to make it an ETOPS alternate?

Mr. Bonaparte will be thrilled at his new opportunities for escape.

Only for small aircraft, I think. Just imagine a 777 with an engine failure trying to land on such a short rwy. As 1 engine is out they can´t use reverse thrust (Yes I know reverse thrust is not included in performance calculations).

Definitely, so will be the tourists coming to see him in jail.  Smile

Oh, so that is where the EU subsidies that were originally earmarked for Airbus are now going.

What is the point to have an airport down there? I don't see any scheduled service to this airport in the near future.

I'm just curious, could an A319LR make it from London to St. Helena? Would RAF have any acft they could send down there non-stop?

See above, mostly touists. And supplying the island with what they need, also very important (currently done by an old post ship which is soon reaching the end of its service life).

My answer is yes, altough there would be payload penalties.
The RAF would serve St. Helena most likely via ASI (which is less than 2000 kms away), just like they serve MPN (Falkland Islands) via ASI.
But I believe a civil carrier would serve the route, perhaps South African ?

Dude, I can't wait until Saint Helena starts showing up as a vacation destination on Expedia's website. I will so be hawking that! Wierd destinations like this are my favorites just because it gets so boring booking Vegas and Cancun trips.

The RAF currently offer flights (I think two or three times a week) to the Falkland via Ascension Island. St Helena can currently only be assessed by boat, the Royal Mail Ship "RMS St Helena" (I think). I don't know when this runway is built if the RAF will offer flight to St Helena itself
