Difference Between Economy Classes?

Tue Sep 27, 2005 10:20 am

I've just booked myself on Malaysian Airlines for a really good price and received my tickets and noticed that they are 'L' class. The discount fares are no longer available.

Having a look on MH's website today, they have fares in the 'Q' and 'M' class which are more expensive. What is the difference between the class that I'm booked in and Q and M and any others?

Nothing in terms of service. The sub-classes are given a letter so that the airlines can divide the cabin up into different priced seats. The difference will come down to the rules regarding the fares.

The airline will decide what letter to put to each class. For example T class is World Traveller Plus (premium economy) on British Airways, but highly discounted economy on Air New Zealand. Some alliances are working towards class standardisation eg oneworld's round world fares are all booked in L class in standard economy.

It's all to do with yield management- selling the right seats at the right time at the right price.

That's true. At NW, "T" means also highly discounted economy for example. There are so many letters for economy tickets with most airlines, that it is really confusing.

Something I find really nasty is that sometimes AM offers a certain discounted fare at their website. If you call the reservations system, you may be able to get a seat on the same flight(s) at a lower fare but AM does not give you the chance to reserve it even for 24 hours, but forces you to buy it right away under the excuse that it is the very last seat in that specific flight at that fare.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

The only difference is in price, you were lucky to get the cheaper seats. By the way I hope you will enjoy flying Malaysia Airlines they are fantastic!! Where are you flying?

I'm flying from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur early next year.

Does having a ticket in a discounted class limit where I can request to be seated at checkin?

You would need to check with MH.

What seems to be normal is that airlines will block preferred seats for premium frequent flyers. Premium frequent flyers may often travel on deeply discounted seats and by putting a block on the seats by booking class might very well annoy them. It's easier to block by frequent flyer status or other service category eg a bulkhead seat by the bassinet will only accept an advanced allocation if the booking has an infant in it.

Enjoy your flights on MH. I've heard that the crew in particualar, are excellent.

It's all to do with the fare type as well. Yes you are paying less but will probably find more restrictions (i.e. non-refundable etc) that matter not to the majority of us flying for leisure, but a businessman may want to pay a higher fare and be able to chop and change whenever they want.

MH are very good, although IFE is looking a bit dated now. Food is excellent!
