Tell Me About Newark?

Fri May 12, 2000 7:00 am

I'm flying to Newark on Saturday - not there for too long and I'd like to find a place where I can get some good shots without being moved on or otherwise hassled by security people. Is there a good place - or places?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

There's a monorail that links the 5 terminals between each others. Get on it and keep your camera ready to take pretty good shots.

Here's one photo that I took from this monorail at EWR:

Expect delays. It is not a bad airport. I like the monorail. I was there last August  . Continental has a hub in Newark.

I was wondering how Newark is in terms of things to do at the airport. I'm going to Ireland this summer and will have to endure a layover of over 4 hours at EWR. Other than riding the monorail a couple of times, are there alot of shops and other things to do at the airport? Thanks for any information and opinions about the airport.

Roughly how long does it take to make one complete loop around the airport on the monorail? I will be connecting at EWR for the first time fairly soon as well.

Afew questions there to answer.

First, a train ride between the 3 stations with aircraft; if the system is running normal, approx 12 mins.

Second, if someone has a long layover on the C- concorse, there are a number of eating places, book store, etc., just like many of the airports are doing in the country.

Third, around gate C96, you can get some good close pictures.

Newark is known as the 'delay' airport. if you happen to be unlucky enough to be there during the peak hour, expect very long waits on the taxiway to take off.. I heard somewhere that it's up to 45 minutes before the plane gets to take off.

If you want to take awesome pictures and if the planes are landing on 22L or 22R, head over to LOT G by taking the bus (FREE) from any of the bus terminals outside the main terminals. Planes are no more than 100 feet up, and the buses run every 5 minutes. TERMINAL C is the only one that lets you go all the way up to the gates without a respective ticket.

Newark is a really nice airport. Especially Terminal C. There are good site to spot within the terminal and because the airport's area is fairly compact, the runways are fairly close to the terminals, which allow for really good spotting. Terminal A is not so nice. I haven't been there since they revamped Terminal B and added the monorail. As well, the city is around the airport so the take-offs and landings allow for some really breathtaking views of the New York/New Jersey area. Most of the international flights leave in the early evening, so if you want to see diversity, wait 'till then, otherwise it's dominated by CO. And the horrors about delays are true. The airport is totally overcapacitated. I have been victem to EWR's delays.

The city itself is not so nice. Newark has the reputation of being the carjacking capital of America. Crime is very high and it's really dangerous to go out at night, and maybe during the day. NJ could have changed as much as New York, but I don't know. You should have a blast. The NYC metro area has loads to offer.

I heard the monorails are on limited schedules lately? Also, I hear they had problems with the track heaters not working? Not that they need them now in the summer, but they need replacement nonetheless. Can't wait 'til they join it to NJTransit!

Terminal C is the only real nice terminal there, and I've found its impossible to get decent photos there...
