Austrian Approve 777 Purchase & Fleet Plan

Wed Sep 28, 2005 9:27 pm

Just released some more details on Austrian Airlines Fleet plans as approved by the Board today.

Supervisory Board approves purchase of one Boeing 777-200ER and
aircraft sales

In its meeting today, the Supervisory Board of Austrian Airlines AG
approved the application to purchase a Boeing B777-200ER long-range
jet as the first replacement for the sale of two Airbus A340-200
aircraft. The Supervisory Board meeting also granted an application
to sell/market up to three Canadair Regional CRJ 100 short-range jets
and market one Boeing B737-600.

There is more but I don't have full transcript yet.

They only order one B777 as a replacement for two A342? And selling/marketing one B736 means another one is left.  scratchchin

777 looks great in OS and L4 livery.

Here is a little more on their reasoning. Please correct me if any details need clarification:

The motive for selling or marketing these aircraft - particularly against the background of the high kerosene prices - is the company19/64s wish to remove uneconomic aircraft types from operation. Due to its lower capacity compared to twin-engined aircraft, the cost per seat of the A340-200 long range jet has risen, for example. The Boeing 737-600 is the last aircraft of this version to be used in the fleet and has in this respect become exotic. Because they use different engines to the CRJ 200 the three CRJ 100 will also be released for sale. These aircraft will be replaced on routes with high load factors by yet operating Fokker 100-Jets with increased capacity.

That is from Mr Thomas Kleibl, Chief Financial Officer. So it seems they only have 1 736 in service.

I know OE-LNL was leased to the US Navy for some time but returned not long ago. Haven't found any info yet whether it has just returned or really went into service again.

Haven't they got one (or more) ex-Lauda 777 in Austrian coulours now?

That's maybe why they can get rid of two 340.

Great news for both Austrian and Boeing, although I'm still puzzled why they are only ordering a single aircraft. From what I read on the above article, they haven't ruled out additional orders. Perhaps a future 787 customer?

Interesting - another potential former A330 operator for the 787.

Personally, I figured OS would be going all ABus.

So if the 7th 767 doesn't arrive in time 2006 OS will have one wide boy less!

In contrast to most comments I can read here I am very sad about this news from OS.

I don't think it's all that unrealistic given OS's fleet before integrating Lauda was going all Airbus - look at their past fleet plan. I'm glad they went with more Boeing's!

Then again, I'm happy when any carrier orders Boeing!

well, the second A342 is planned to leave the Fleet with beginning of 2007. With that Date OS needs the B763 as they are planning to add HYD or BLR to their network in 2007. No Aircraft no Expansion. Wouldn´t suprise me if OS will take a 5th T7 meanwhile, especially because there a Plans to go VIE-KUL-SYD and VIE-SIN-MEL daily.

Lets see

Is it true that OS is also considering changing the intermediate point on VIE-MEL from SIN to BKK?

As I understand it, the SIN-MEL sector is very competitive, while there is only TG operating BKK-MEL, and OS already operates daily to BKK

Hmm, that seems very interesting. I mean, Boeing fleet were inherited not chosen by Austrian, but it is also nice to see how OS likes them and even wants some more.

A fine airline; I had a wonderful flight back from Tokyo to VIE a few years back, on OE-LAG, to date my first and only flight on a -200.

Although there's nothing official yet on OS going for 787s, everything seems to point to it (as we say in Ireland, the ducks are in a row!). The 332s and 767s will give way to 788s and ultimately, the 777s will probably give way to 789s.

Does OS plan on any further capacity increase, ie addtional 777 orders, in the future? Also, does anyone know why, other then on A.Net and OS's homepage, this topic isn't being discussed much? I've seen nothing about it on Boeing's site.

depends on their financial situation, but i would say YES. With their Strategy for next 4 - 5 years an Increase of their Longhaul Fleet is a must.

OS currently looking into a bunch of Destinations in Asia and OS made clear that their longhaulfuture will be in in there, although i would like to see some more Places in the States like LAX, MIA or ORD.

When OS announced that it was starting flights to BOM they also said that they were exploring additional Indian destinations. Their flights from DEL and BOM seem to be doing fairly well. Are they looking at adding flights to BLR, HYD once they get newer planes?

  • Lauda Air owned 777-200ERs.
  • These 777-200ERs were moneymakers, and performing at or beyond expectation.
  • Austrian acquired Lauda Air, and realized that Lauda's 777 fleet had better operating economics than their own A340 fleet.
  • Austrian decided to replace their A340s with an additional 777, to homogenize the fleet.

Boeing's gamble begun back in the 90's is paying off.
