All Nippon NRT-PHX... How Likely? How Soon?

Wed Sep 28, 2005 10:28 pm

Now with PHX becoming a Star Alliance Hub through the HP/US merger, when can we expect ANA to consider starting a nonstop to/from NRT? Besides its proximity to the Grand Canyon, PHX would provide ample connection opportunities to US Airways throughout the American west and Mexico; NRT would enable numerous connections throughout Japan and East Asia on ANA. I predict that the loads and yields should be sufficient to fill a daily 777-200.

I seriously doubt they would serve PHX--especially with the connections available to other NH IS gateways. If they did--maybe it would be a tag--but I doubt you'd see too many, if any new carriers at PHX as a result of this merger.

Japanese tourists see the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas...loves the Grand Canyon/Las Vegas/West Coast Combo. In that respect, PHX will not see very many Japanese tourist going up to the Grand Canyon from PHX area. PHX only has a few Grand Canyon air tour companies (Vegas has a ton) and the drive is over three hours to GCN. Very inconvenient.

These packaged tourists are typicallly low yield. As far as the potential for sizeable connecting passenger traffic beyond PHX or beyond NRT both directions, there isn't really anything ORD, SFO, LAX can't take care of on UA....I would expect ANA to someday return to ORD.

Wait for the 787.

It's obviously not going to happen tomorrow, but the 787 was almost tailor-made for a route like this.

I'm placing my money on about the time pigs fly, maybe a day or two before that.

Las Vegas would happen first....

Besides, I'm sure ANA is getting enough feed from UA's LAX/SFO hubs as well. But, agreed, once the 787 becomes a reality, we could see a route like this working possibly.

This seems to make little sense since such a flight would cannibalize either their LAX or SFO or both flights. Although the 787 was made for routes like these, the problem is that ANA, like all other airlines, is squeezed for slots at Narita. I am not aware of particularly strong O&D between Phoenix and Japan so I do not know how high a priority that PHX would be. LAX covers the southwest pretty well as far as connectivity.

We'd probably see NCA Cargo first. PHX has a strong high-tech industry with many exports to Asia.
