Independence Air Announces Its First-Ever Caribbean Destination: Airbus Service From Washington Dulles to San Juan, Puerto Rico
Wednesday September 28, 3:33 pm ET

DULLES, Va., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Low-fare airline Independence Air (Nasdaq: FLYI - News) is announcing new nonstop service from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) beginning December 16, 2005. Service will be aboard FLYi's 132-passenger Airbus A319 aircraft.

The flight schedule will include one daily roundtrip, departing from Washington at 9:30am and from San Juan at 3:20pm. Tickets for the new nonstop Caribbean flights to/from Washington are available for sale now at http://www.FLYi.com. Tickets for connecting flights from other Independence Air destinations to/from San Juan will be available shortly.

Independence Air Chairman and CEO Kerry Skeen said, "All of us are very excited about introducing San Juan to the Independence Air route network -- just in time for the holidays and the upcoming winter travel season. For our customers in the Washington, DC area as well as all our other FLYi cities, this new service is the perfect solution for everyone who's looking for a fast, easy and inexpensive way to get to the Caribbean."

This deployment is one element in an overall strategic plan designed to increase total A319 departures by serving more Eastern destinations -- including new Airbus flights to Jacksonville, Pittsburgh and Chicago -- while reducing service West of the Mississippi. As of November 29th, Las Vegas will remain as Independence Air's only destination in the West.

Independence Air offers low fares every day with comfortable leather seats and Tender Loving Service(SM). For more information about FLYi, Inc. and Independence Air, please visit our website at FLYi.com.

Well, this goes to show all those who doubted FLYi. They just might be on the way up. Good luck.

Its states that LAS will remain the only west coast destination by FLYi. Is this true one the winter schedual goes into effect? What about SFO, LAX, and SEA? I was under the impression that DH was doing fairly well on the west coast.

PanAm, Braniff, and Eastern all beefed up service to Caribbean shortly prior to going belly-up. Why? It's easy pax, or so they think.

I am not going to speculate anymore on the demise of any of the airlines. I, along with many others, thought that USAirways would have kicked the bucket last year but look...they have emerged from bankruptcy, in much better shape and with a new lease on "life." I think the survival of US taught many a lesson...it's not over until the fat lady sings...and there was no fat lady singing at USAirways.

As I've posted elsewhere... they probably wouldn't do as well in Puerto Rico as jetBlue does there because I don't think that Washington has a very large population concentration of Puerto Ricans as NYC has. I think the Puerto Rican community has made it clear that they want non-stop flights to PR and AA and B6 have delivered out of NYC.

I doubt many will go out of their way to fly out of LGA to IAD, then take another plane to SJU if they have low-fare non-stop flights out of JFK with B6. And I have found that DH is very unreliable... after flying them with their Glidepass over the summer I would never fly them again unless I'm desperate AND have lots of time on my hands because the shortest delay I've had with DH was 2.5 hours (the longest, 7 hours) and out of the 15 flights I used the pass for, 9 were delayed and 1 was canceled. Mainly due to their so called "weather delays" but I have a feeling it was more due to incompetence delays in that they were the only airline to experience all-day delays from half-hour storms.

United/Ted restart the daily IAD-SJU flights in December. It's a good winter market but traffic can't sustain it in the off season. United flies to San Juan daily from Chicago year-round.
