Has Bangkok's New Airport Opened?

Thu Sep 29, 2005 10:50 am

I recently found this pic. I have not heard anything about the airport lately, so I am wondering if it has opened or not. If it has, anyone know what it's like inside?

Simple answer NO!!

Apparently some time around June next year. That photo shows 2 test flights to the airport that took place a couple of days ago.

Today (29th September) was supposed to be the official opening date, but the airport has a number of delays. However, today the Prime Minister will fly to the airport in an A340-600 while the press will take a B744, and there will be some kind of official ceremony. Once that's over, construction work will continue until next year.

It's a good move by the Prime Minister to save face and show that the airport is in some way operational, while still being far behind schedule.

It hasn't officially been open yet, what Thaksin is doing is just to fly there to show that the airport is somewhat ready for use..

Even the June 2006 opening date is in jeopardy now. Airlines around Asia have been informed that it'll more likely be the end of October 2006.

If it was "Indian Standard Time", the airport would have opened somewhere in 2016.
