Why Didn't My Landing Gear Come Down Together?

Fri Sep 30, 2005 1:31 am

I was on a flight recently from SMF-LAS on Southwest. It was a newer 737 and I was sitting in seat 7A. I could see the reflection of the underside of the plane in the reflection of the freshly painted engine cowling.

My question is this--I was watching the underside of the plane as we prepared to land and I could see the rear landing gear come down and lock and then there was a good 5-7 second delay before i saw the front landing gear come down.

I thought the landing gear always came down together--why the delay between the two sets???? Was there something wrong?

It probably just takes longer for the front gear to come all the way down.

OH MY GOD, THE LANDING GEAR DIDN'T COME DOWN AT THE SAME TIME!!  Smile

Um, it just probably takes longer for the front landing gear to come down.

Actually its quite common for landing gear to travel at differant rates of speed. You'll notice the two sets of main gear even travel at differant rates. I've shot departures numerous times where a Left Gear door was shut and closed completely, while the Right Gear door was still open a tad.

I beleive this is because each gear is powered by a separate hydraulic system, so it may take a differant ammount of time for each system to run its course.
I think Big Foot is blurry, Its not the photographers fault. Theres a large out of focus monster roaming the countryside

One Hydraulic system & one Secondary system for all Three Gears.
Remember all three Gears have Three Different Actuators. There is bound to be a Lag somewhere.
