India's Alliance Air And The A319?

Fri Sep 30, 2005 9:07 pm

The latest issue of WAFN (World Airline Fleets News) shows an A319 allocation to Alliance Air (msn 2593), with no further info available.

What are the plans for Alliance Air - will they lease A319s from the new Indian Airlines order or from another source?

The 20 or so A319s ordered by IC are for CD, to replace the rusty and smoky 732s. And the GOI has leased some A319s for CDs for the interim, afaik

The plans are for four leased A319's to come in by the end of this fiscal year to replace the very old 737-200's which will go into the new cargo business. Of the 20 A319's which are part of the 43-plane order, some ten will go to Alliance - which is IC's single-class airline (not quite a low-cost) that operates into a lot of secondary airports. In certain cases they operate the only flight to those airports.

So it seems these will be new ones as well.

New leased planes for CD - quite a change from flying planes older than me. My experiences with hairy CD flights on those 737's are bad enough to give a young man heart attacks. I wonder what paint scheme they'll paint them in.

While take-off, the noise beats a 747-200.. the omitted smoke beats the congestion of MAA - however, I love the rides on 'em Big grin

I am really going to miss them. Plan to fly them atleast once before they are phased out. IC is also planning to convert CD into a LCC.

They should really change the color scheme. The present one makes no sense at all. It's worst than the IC livery.

Alliance Air is a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian Airlines, so the utilisation will be done pretty much basis need of the single entity on top. Matter of fact, some of the old B-737-200s with Alliance Air still carry the old Indian Airlines colours.

Route rationalisation, equipment swopping, commercial, the works, is common across IC and CD.

However, expect IC to be much more aggressive on international routes in the very near future. Basic safe airplanes with decent food and plenty of booze, who needs IFE to clog up legroom, especially at the prices they make the market cover?

You are right. As I understand most if not all the 319 checks will be at CCU while the 320/321 will be split between DEL/HYD and BOM.

Currently major checks for the A320s are being done at both DEL and HYD, BOM does the A300 checks (and may be 320s as well?) while the 737 checks are done at CCU.

Some of the A319's will be used in the NE, where CD is very strong (their ATR 42's go at 90% loads) but loses out on cargo revenues (ATR's no space). The ATR's will be sent to feeder routes out of CCU and some more might be acquired for DEL (Kanpur, Dehradun). I believe that CD's great DEL-Jaipur-Jodhpur-Udaipur-BOM flight will continue with the A319. If anyone plans to get a ride on one of those 737-200's do it on that route. I flew to Jodhpur back in Feb 2003 and landing at the airbase (Jodhpur is a forward AB for the IAF) is quite a sight. The place is crawling with MiG-23's and MiG-29's you'll even see some SAM sites. You actually have to taxi through a large tree lined boulevard (a plane down a boulevard!!!!) to get to the civilian terminal which looks like a groteque mix of a Western and Rajasthani castle. Great flight, and I highly recommend it!

Some of the Alliancce Air routes with 737s were those which cannot take a 320 right now, including Vizag, Mangalore Agra etc. Can all of these take the 319s?

Local Airports need to be upgraded soon to cope with this Aviation Boom in the Country.
Including its security & Airport Layout.

Agra from Delhi by air does not work simply because road and rail are very fast as well as very frrequent, also much cheaper. Agra airport further suffers from excessive Air Force paratroopers usage, so that delays things too.

More than anything else, beyond the Taj Mahal, that city has nothing to offer. So n overnight halt is just not feasible which is why day return road/rail options work much better.

but still Agra has the tourist potential for a decent airport and also if it can be connected to Jaipur by air. that should be good as tourists could visit Agra from Del and then fly to jaipur without missing much time on road...

Quite true - however the Shatabdi leaves at 6 in the morning. But if you're going to Agra, cars are really the best choice. You have a lot more flexibility - you can see Fatehpur Sikri on the way as well. Plus - Agra-Jaipur by plane would make you miss Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary - which incidentally this year has a full complement of bird. That said, the Agra-Jaipur road is awful. And if you do overnight - you have some amazing hotels at Agra and Jaipur.
Talking about IAF interference- Delhi airport of late have been suffering major delays thanks to AF exercises while preparing for AF Day.

Actually Thursday's major delays at DEL were not so much due to Air Force but because "an international airline" (one that sometimes flies with three engines??) did not take back 17 odd passengers who had landed with visa irrefularities. The aircraft was on taxi by the time Immigration Authorities could get ATC to call the aircraft back, and there was some time wasted after that.

That and the subsequent planned shutdown for 2 hours on Thursday 6th caused many flights to miss their outbound and inbound slots.

What was this visa irregularity business? Did these 17 passengers also make the same mistake that Ricky Martin did when he came to India (assuming Visa on Arrival?)

SRB did the same when he came to BOM with his A346. Poor fellow had to call PMO and get extra-ordinary permission.
