Kenya Airways Introduces New Route

Sat Oct 01, 2005 5:39 am

Kenya Airways is to start (on October 2) twice weekly operation to the capital of Mozambique - Maputo city.

And that will be codeshare between KQ and TM i.e - Kenya Airways and LAM Mozambique Airlines.

Considering the economic resurgence of Mozambique (or at least the southern half of the country) after the protracted civil war, this should come as no big surprise.

Their successful rebuilding projects in tourism (have you ever seen more beautiful beaches ?), aluminum smelting and in natural gas production were eventually bound to produce enough demand for such a flight.

For Europeans this flight now offers an alternative to SAA and TAP; I hope it will also drive prices down to a reasonable leavel as the current fares really don't help them to attract many European tourists.

BTW: It is kind of funny that KQ, which has a well established partnership with KL/AF introduces a code shares with TM just after TM was placed on the French black list. IMHO it is a pretty decent airline that is doing a great jobs of overcoming the multiple challenges that arise from operating in a country such as Mozambique.

Interesting news... KQ has really come up with a lot of new routes lately. They flew a 777ER from SEA to NBO (fully loaded) back in June right (maiden flight)? I believe that was a a 16.5-hr flight.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

Man it's so sad to see that classic KQ livery go  Sad

I still can't believe that Air Tanzania hasn't entered the Mozambique market from Dar. Maybe a codeshare with LAM, considering Air Taz's lack of equipment?

Honestly, so many opportunities being wasted by the poor management of Aie Tanzania by SAA. But good on KQ for now having the most comprehensive route network across Africa.

Is KQ actually flying to CPT? I was looking for airfares to Africa ex BKK on them and the route map on their website shows NBO-JNB-CPT flights, but I couldn't actually find any flights operating intp CPT.

I can't figure out KQ. What is going on with Bamako-Dakar? I heard they pulled out of Shanghai? And Istanbul? New routes, yes, but I think some bad decisions were made.

They have just started Instabul, I do not think they would pull out yet too early. We will have to wait how they do on the route. But it is nice to the airline expand well.

KQ pulled out of Cape Town earlier this year, and now only flies to JNB. Flights to CPT were operated nonstop from NBO.

Shanghai was pulled even before it was introduced, with Guangzhou replacing it. Istanbul was also started earlier this summer, and as far as I know, it's still active. Bamako and Dakar are also in the last batch, along with Free Town, Sierra Leone and Maputo.

Is it true KQ are starting flights to MIA? I think that would be so cool if they did but like someone said earlier, they are hard to figure out.

KQ has clearly stated that they are not interested in MIA.

Most of these flights KQ is trying out now, ET dropped several years ago because of poor loads. ET once served Maputo, Freetown, Turkey (larnaca), Dakar. So I really wonder how well they will do on that route. ET serves Bamako via Ndjamena (Chad) with a 767 x a week, and they seem to do well on that route. So KQ might do well on the Bamako route but not with a 737.

KQ flies 4 weekly flights
2 via ABJ 767
2 737 direct
People prefer the direct one alltho its a 737.
If KQ is to serve Bamako with a 737 from NBO it will be succesful as
1- the only airline between NBO and Bamako
2- Provide links to Asia as well as East and Southern Africa (Competition with ET)
Next destinations, Suarabaya, beirut, paris, Accra

Do they plan on flying their 772ER's to the US anytime soon? I could be wrong but I've heard that they were upgrading the terminal at NBO to comply with United States security standards of having direct flights into the country.

Oops. thanks for pointing that out.

ET hasn't been adding any new routes lately. Just increasing frequency on excisting routes. The last new rout we saw from ET is LGW and that is just a new airport in an already served city.

Don't know where you check your scheds, but Amadeus only has the 737 flights twice per week, nonstop, continuing on to DKR.

Exactly. ET has said that in order to make itself attractive to other airlines in terms of partnerships and connections, it has decided to work on its frequency and on decresing or eliminating multiple stop routes. The current and next season's schedule show just that, with no route offered with more than one stop, and many routes getting additional frequencies and more standardized departure times all week (ie all flights to DAR now leave at 0950).

Quoting AF022 (Reply 13):

Ya man. Twice per week, I believe it makes a stop at ACC. Operated with a 737.

Apologies i forgot to mention that those are schedule to ACC.
the 737 is more popular cause its direct

The FNA flight does not go via ACC
