Name For New French Carrier

Fri May 12, 2000 11:39 pm

Hi all
Which name would you suggest for the merged AOM, Air Littoral and Air Liberte?

I think they should keep AOM's name because it is both recognized internationally and domestically. AOM's name with a corporate rebranding (new livery + slogans etc) is I think very appropriate

Forgive the stupid question, what does AOM stand for? (I would need the english translation also!)

AOM stand for Air Outre Mer, roughly translated as outlying or far seas. Perhaps one of our French-speaking members could provide something a little more elegant, but I hope this helps for now.

I think the should keep Air Liberte which is a better name. With AOM, which is more recognizable, people doesn't know what it stands for or where it's from. The777Man

Outre Mer means overseas. Outre mer are the french overseas provinces such as Tahiti, Guyana, Reunion etc.

The name AOM says that this airline puts a focus on these destinations.

I think they should go head on with Air France, and call the airline French Air.

I think they should call it "French Flies"     , and they could have a crisp, golden-colored livery....(get it.. French Flies... golden...crisp. Oh well, never mind).

How about Fleur-de-lis Air??

or AirNapolean

French Air is not a good idea because the French are very delicate about there language. They don't like English at all. In this case it must be a french name.

Volare and Air Europe will also be merged. Why not merge Air Europe, Volare, Air Liberte AOM and Air Littoral.
Out of these they should keep the Air Europe name. Air Europe can be understood in French and English.

Its not a good idea, you can't just merge airlines, becuase you need a new name. Phillipe/SAir are very smart, I think the smartest chiefs in Europe right now. They know what they're doing. The French are very picky, much more than just names. Any cross-border merger will require years of analysis because the French will be very anathema to loosing any French jobs or any downsizing of French operations at all. Jospin and the socialists have not created what you would call a "flexible, welcoming business environment."

TWANeedsHELP, are you forgetting that when BA took control of Air Liberte they slashed hundreds of jobs and significantly downsized the airline? What happened to BA's promise of new aircraft for Air Liberte? I guess that died along with BA's profit margins.

An SAir aquisition would be good because AF need the competition on French domestic routes. AOM + Air Liberte desperately need new aircraft to replace the aging DC10's and MD83's and given SAir's relationship with Airbus, new Airbus orders for the airline would also be a boon for French jobs.

A merged AOM/Air Liberte/Volare/Air Europe/Littoral would be a good idea but where do you put the hub?   Order more Airbus to synergize the fleet and this airline will really take shape.
